Blackhawk Tech Board to get new members
It appears the Blackhawk Technical College Board will be getting at least two new members in July.
Three of the board members’ terms expire June 30. Lauri Steeber of Janesville and John Waelti of Monroe have indicated they would not apply for another three-year term on the board, a BTC spokesman said.
The third incumbent, Barbara Barrington-Tillman of Janesville, will apply for what would be her second term on the board, the spokesman said.
New members will join the rest of the nine-member board during an exciting time. The board is moving ahead with plans to establish a manufacturing training center in Milton, is looking at providing agriculture classes at a new facility near Evansville if a private group can pull together funding, and the board recently authorized the administration to research the feasibility of a referendum to expand and renovate at the central campus.
The board sets the tax levy and would decide whether to place a referendum before voters, but the board is not elected. The chairmen of the Rock and Green county boards appoint BTC Board members.
The chairmen are seeking applicants for all three board seats, BTC announced this week. Applications will be accepted until 4 p.m. Monday, March 25.
Three members of the nine-member board are appointed each year. Board members are not paid but are compensated for board-related expenses.
Rules require that Steeber’s seat be held by an employee. Barrington’s is for an employer. Waelti’s seat is for an “additional member” and could be held by any resident of the district, which comprises most of Rock and Green counties.
Consideration also is given to the district’s population distribution and representation of women and members of minority groups.
Applicants must submit two references supporting their nominations and must attend a meeting of the District Board Appointment Committee to be interviewed.
The committee—comprising the two county board chairmen—meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in Room N-2 at the Rock County Courthouse, 51 S. Main St., Janesville. A second meeting would be scheduled at the same time and place Monday, April 29, to accommodate any candidate who could not attend the first meeting.
Applications forms can be obtained by contacting Jackie Pins, Blackhawk Technical College, 6004 S. County G, P.O. Box 5009, Janesville, WI 53547. Pins’ phone number is 608-757-7772. Her email is jpins@blackhawk.edu.

Along with the Doc whom every board member is afraid of and just goes along with what he wants. Example the board did not have any spine to defend the aviation dept to save money as he put it. Then turns around and spends even more money building a new facility in Milton that even cost more. The board approved all of this without blinking a eye.

chelleandlou, that isn't precisely correct. Parts of Green County are apparently in the Southwest Wisconsin district and the Madison District, parts of Rock County are in the Gateway District, and Blackhawk also includes a small part of Dane County. This is in part because technical college districts may follow school district boundaries rather than county/town/municipal boundaries. It is largely up to the LGAs as to which technical college district they want to be in, as long as the subsidiary elements are contiguous.

Not only do we need new board members....more importantly, we need a new system to abolish the current system of taxation without representation in the truest sense.

'Comprises most of Rock and Green Counties," really? The Blackhawk Tech district IS ROCK and GREEN Counties.
