Mohns, Gaspervich top Rock players

A torn ACL put an early end to Carly Mohns' Rock Valley Conference girls basketball season a year ago.

This season brought a much happier ending for the Brodhead High junior. Mohns was named the Rock Valley South Player of the Year after leading the Cardinals to the conference title and a Division 3 sectional berth.

East Troy senior Breanna Gaspervich is the Player of the Year in the Rock Valley North. Gaspervich is joined on the first team by teammates Rachel Atchison and Alicia Oleson, along with Whitewater junior Brooke Trewyn and Jefferson junior Katy Heine.

Brodhead senior Taylor Douglas, Clinton juniors Megan Lantz and Mallory Niemann, as well as Palmyra-Eagle senior Sam Morateck round out the South first team.

Mohns averaged 12.2 points per game despite sitting out the fourth quarter in many games, as the Cardinals had numerous lopsided wins en route to a 15-1 conference record.

"Carly is so tough for teams to match up with," said Brodhead coach Brad Pickett, the Rock Valley South Coach of the Year. "If you put someone smaller on her, she can post up. If you put someone taller on her, she goes right around them.

"And she's not afraid to do the little things on the court, either. She will take a charge, dive on the floor for a loose ball or get her teammates involved."

Gaspervich finished third in the conference in scoring with a 17.3 average and led the league in free throw percentage at 90 percent. She helped lead the Trojans to a perfect 16-0 conference season.

Trewyn was the conference's top scorer at 20.1 points per game, while Atchison made 51 3-pointers in league games.
