Rock County caregiver resource fair set for June 18
JANESVILLE — Thirty percent of adult Americans help a loved one with personal needs, household chores, finances, arranging services or regular visits.
Most care for adults, about one in five have children with significant disabilities or health issues.
“Caregiving touches almost every family but in very different ways,” said Julie Seeman, Rock County Council on Aging Family Caregiver Support Program and outreach specialist.
“They have different health conditions, different situations and even different cultures,” she said.
That's why the Rock County Caregiver Resource Network and Rock County Council on Aging are hosting the first Family Caregiver Resource Fair on Tuesday, June 18, at the Pontiac Convention Center, 2809 Pontiac Drive.
It is free and open to the public, but it's targeted at family caregivers, employed family caregivers, grandparents raising grandchildren and health/social work professionals.
“It's open to all who are caring for anyone of any age with issues of aging, disability or mental illness plus anyone interested in caregiving issues,” Seeman said.
Those who attend can meet with more than 40 organizations that provide services and support to caregivers and their loved ones, she said.
Participants also can take advantage of the following educational sessions:
-- Positive Communication with Persons with Dementia. Enhance your understanding of how dementia affects communication and learn how to listen and relate effectively.
-- Betwixt and Between: Navigating Through a Family Caregivers World. A humorous approach to taking care of ourselves when giving/providing care to others.
-- Help for Your Aging Parents and You. Learn how to access community resources to find solutions when caring for aging parents, relatives or friends.
Also featured will be chances to win door prizes and playing “Caregiver Jeopardy,” a spin-off version of the popular TV game show Jeopardy!
“It's information and resources for care giving across the lifespan,” Seeman said.
