Warhawks sweep

The free-throw line was kind to UW-Whitewater's men's basketball team Wednesday night.

The Warhawks made 21 of 27 free throws and got a career-high 24 points from Alex Merg in rallying past UW-La Crosse, 71-63, in a WIAC game at the Williams Center.

Whitewater (16-4, 9-3) trailed by seven at half, but outscored La Crosse (9-11, 3-8) 42-27 in the second half.

Luke Knoble added 12 points for the Warhawks, while Elkhorn High graduate Eric Bryson chipped in 11.

Lake Geneva Badger graduate Braden Tice had 12 points for La Crosse. Lucas Collom led the Eagles with 18 points.

Whitewater hosts St. Norbert College in a nonconference game Saturday night.

Kumerow helps keep Whitewater women in first

Courtney Kumerow was too tough to handle for the UW-La Crosse women's basketball team Tuesday night.

The UW-Whitewater center had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Warhawks to a 58-56 WIAC win.

Whitewater (16-5, 10-2) remained in first place in the WIAC with the win.

The Warhawks defense forced 19 turnovers and limited the Eagles to a 37 percent shooting night from the field.

Kaitlyn Thill added 13 points for Whitewater, which has the conference bye this Saturday. The Warhawks play at UW-Platteville next Wednesday.
