Parents who want to send their children to a different school district for the 2013-14 school year can start signing them up Monday.

Wisconsin's open enrollment period runs from Feb. 4 through April 30.

The state encourages parents to apply online, although school districts and the state Department of Public Instruction also have paper application forms.

The online application form is available at www2.dpi.state.wi.us/OpenEnrollApp. Paper applications must be delivered to the nonresident school district during the application period.

Applications to attend the Janesville School District of Janesville must be submitted to the Administrative Services Department no later than 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 30. A postmark does not constitute timely submission.

Enrollment in a requested school or program is subject to space and other limitations and is not guaranteed. Transportation is the parent's responsibility.

Under Janesville School District policy, students who attended the district under open enrollment the previous year are not required to reapply for the following school year, unless they will be entering middle school.

An application is required for each sibling in the family. For example, if a family has one child in elementary school that has been approved for open enrollment and a new student entering kindergarten or preschool the next year, the student entering kindergarten or preschool must apply for open enrollment in order to attend a Janesville public school.

Parents will be informed in June whether their open enrollment applications have been approved or denied. Those approved will be informed in June as to which school their children will attend.

Paper applications are available from the Janesville School District Administrative Services Office at the Educational Services Center, 527 S. Franklin St.

More information is on the state's open enrollment web page, sms.dpi.wi.gov/sms_psctoc.

For more information in Janesville, call 608-743-5006.

I think wislady is alluding to a celebration of the opportunity to have a choice as what school to go to, not the period of signup time.
