The Verona boys hockey team proved Tuesday night why its in a league of its own in the Big Eight Conference.

The defending conference champion Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 6-1 win over the Janesville Bluebirds at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.

Janesville's high school co-op team cut the lead to 2-1 in the first period on Braden Perkins' goal, but Verona (19-2-0, 11-0-0) goalie Alex Jones kept the Bluebirds off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Verona outscored Janesville 14-1 in two games this season.

"Verona's got a couple of good lines, and they were able to take advantage of a couple of breakdowns we had," Janesville coach John Mauermann said.

"We worked our butts off the first period and a half and didn't have much to show for it. And then when we had a chance to keep it close, they got a goal late in the second period to make it 4-1."

Janesville plays at Madison East/La Follette on Thursday night.
