Man hiding in vacant house
TOWN OF ROCK — Police report that they arrested a man who was hiding in a vacant house after he crashed a stolen car, was thrown from it and ran from police during a chase Saturday.
According to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff's Office, deputies arrested Rodney T. Moore, 36, Milwaukee, on a number of charges after he tried to flee deputies on West Bass Creek Road just south of Afton.
According to the report:
Deputies were trying to stop Moore's vehicle, a blue 1992 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, because the car's license plates weren't registered to the vehicle.
Moore tried to outrun police in the car, speeding east on West Bass Creek road at about 70 miles per hour, before the car lost control on a curve, went off the road and hit a tree.
Moore was thrown from the car and then ran off. Police scoured the Rock River bottoms near the crash site with K-9 officers in an attempt to track Moore.
Officers later found a cellphone in the car and traced it to a residence at the 2900 block of West Bass Creek Road.
Police went there and found Moore in a bathroom, where he was huddled in a stand-up shower with a space heater running. Moore told police he used to stay at the residence with his ex-girlfriend, who owned the cellphone.
Moore was treated for injuries at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville, and was booked at the Rock County Jail for operating a motor vehicle without owner's consent, fleeing, reckless driving, operating under the influence of a controlled substance, and for a host of misdemeanor charges and outstanding warrants.
He remains in custody pending an initial appearance today in court.
