Evansville Bible group, communty efforts lead to large cross by Highway 14
EVANSVILLE What is it: Drivers on Highway 14 north of Evansville might have noticed a large cross along the road. It's a symbol—16 feet tall by 9 feet wide—of one Bible study group's faith and the result of a big volunteer effort.
The cross is made of two solid wood beams salvaged from the Economy Building on Evansville's Main Street, said Roger Berg, who is part of the group and owner of Berg Rentals.
He said group members, who come from churches throughout Evansville, came up with the idea.
As they worked to make it a reality, community members stepped up to help.
Kyle Allen from Allen Custom Flatwork offered to pour concrete for the cross. Lighthouse Metals donated the labor to make a saddle to hold it. Chris Dickett let them use his shop.
"You know how it goes," Berg said, "it just kind of builds its own momentum."
With the plan coming together and the group looking for a location, Dan and Kelly Gildner volunteered some of their land a few hundred feet north of the Evansville city limits on the north side of Highway 14.
When it was time to hoist the cross into place a few weeks ago, Louis Fahey from Fahey Pumps put his truck to work lifting it. The cross weighs between 600 and 700 pounds, group member Phil Woodworth said.
"It was definitely a group and many-person effort," Berg said.
Woodworth guessed that about 15 people helped the group realize its vision. He and Berg are reluctant to take any credit for the cross. Recognition wasn't the reason they built it, he said.
"We put it up there for the glory of God, not to glorify ourselves, by any means," Woodworth said.
The cross already is getting noticed. Berg said he received a letter from someone who drove by it and tracked down his information just to say, "Thank you."
What's next: The Bible study group's project might not yet be over, Woodworth said. He wants to illuminate the cross at night so the emblem of faith could be seen 24 hours a day.
