JPAC to allow beverages in theater

— The Janesville Performing Arts Center will immediately start allowing both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages in the theater during performances.

But the only beverages allowed in the theater are those bought from the JPAC bar in the lobby before a show or during intermission.

Patrons wishing to take beverages inside the theater must buy a $2 JPAC plastic reusable beverage container, which has a swivel lid to prevent spills. It can be brought back to future JPAC performances.

"JPAC wants to give our patrons the ability to be comfortable in the theater, as if they were in their own home," said Elizabeth Horvath, executive director, in a news release.

"Other neighboring performing arts facilities, such as the Overture Center (Madison) and the Irving Young Auditorium (Whitewater), allow the perk of beverages in the theater, and JPAC should offer the same accommodations," she said.

JPAC had received many requests for this policy change, Horvath said.

What's wrong with enjoying a glass of wine during a show? MBHammer, it's not just overseas where enjoying a drink at a show or in a park is common. It happens right here in Milwaukee as well.

How is it that Janesville folks blow this out of proportion by picturing a strip club full of hammered patrons who can't go an hour without a drink. Relax!

Wow - the Gazette gets out all the great news stories first! With this level of reporting, I'll bet their in line for a "Pullet Surprise"!

And what's the problem with (or news in) allowing people who are out for the night to have water, a soda, or a beer or wine during the show? Should have happened years ago.

If you can't handle your alcohol (or can't handle others drinking), don't drink it (or don't look) - but allow those adults among us who can drink alcohol responsibly to enjoy it as they see fit.

Puritans, drunks, and fools...the bane of the the responsible adult pursuing life, liberty and happiness in a "free" country! What a silly, small-minded, backwater burg this city remains, with little hope to appear otherwise to anyone from outside it with half a brain.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing and I didn’t know they allowed drinks into Young Auditorium (haven’t been there since last April) but I did get a good chuckle from the responses of 3 of my favorite responders, (in no particular order) gazettefan, garyprimer and frogger. Thank you for making my otherwise lousy weekend better. Nuff said.

My wife laughs at these stories. She lived and worked overseas where this is not a problem, beer, wine in parks, etc. with no problems. I guess people are more mature and grown up across the ocean.

cool now I can use my sippy cup at the park and JPAC. It is nice not to have to slam your glass of wine in 2 minutes.

Sounds to me like you couldn't even have water with you...so this is a good thing, really. I don't think that everyone who wanted the change necessarily wanted to drink alcohol.

I think we should be allowed to bring our pets, too, as long as they're thirty pounds and under! I'd really feel like I was at home then! Booze and Buffy and good entertainment! Winning combo!

Who makes these decisions? I have heard everything now. It degrades the organization. Sad to learn JPAC is losing its great reputation.

Get my drinking helmet Marge, we're going to JPAC for some real culture, like plastic beer mugs with swivel lids!
