— The United Way Blackhawk Region is projecting it will raise $2.7 million-plus toward its $2.8 million 2012 campaign goal.

The announcement was made Wednesday morning during the organization's annual meeting and recognition event at the Pontiac Convention Center, 2809 N. Pontiac Drive.

"We're quite pleased and very gratified," said Steve Kinkade, region president.

As of Tuesday, $2.4 million "was actually in the office and audited," he said. Almost another $250,000 is coming in based upon verbal outstanding commitments.

Kinkade's optimism stems, in part, from the fact the Janesville School District employee campaign, one of United Way's largest, is just taking place now. Also, between 12 and 15 national accounts including Target and Chrysler still are being tracked, so United Way has not received dollar amounts of how much pledges from these employees will be, he said.

"I think when all is said and done the projected number is probably going to be $2.7 million and something," Kinkade said.

Even though projected numbers indicate the group might not meet its goal, cutbacks to United Way's 100-plus programs and 42 nonprofit organizations are not being considered, Kinkade said.

"We don't foresee any allocation adjustments being necessary, and we do not envision any reduction in allocations for 2013 at this time," he said. "It is not part of the discussion."
