Repeat trip for Badger wrestlers

It's back to state for Lake Geneva Badger's wrestling team.

The Badgers rallied to win the Milton Team Sectional title Tuesday night with a 29-23 victory over Mount Horeb/Barneveld.

Badger wrestles second-ranked Kaukauna in a Division 1 quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1 at the UW Field House in Madison.

Tuesday's match started at 132 pounds where Bryan Nugent gave the Badgers an early 3-0 lead. Mount Horeb/Barneveld won the next six matches to open up a 20-3 lead before Badger rallied late.

Taylor Hildebrandt started the rally with a pin at 195 pounds, and Robert Johnson (220) and Carlos Garcia followed with wins to make it 20-19 heading into the final four bouts.

Michael Peter (106) and Alex Martinez (113) both won for Badger as it took the lead for good at 26-20. Adan Ortiz clinched the state berth for the Badgers with a 13-6 win at 120.

In Division 2 Team Sectional results, Brodhead/Juda and East Troy came up short in their bids to reach state.

Brodhead/Juda put together a furious late charge before falling 36-34 to Dodgeville in the semifinal match of the Lodi Team Sectional. Mauston defeated Dodgeville 54-17 in the title match to earn the state berth.

The Cardinals trailed 36-3 but won the last six weight classes to make it close. Brady Colden (160), Hunter Colden (170), Gavin Baade (182), Tyler Davis (195), Reave Lincoln (220) and Logan Maurer (285) all won for Brodhead/Juda, including Maurer's 10-second pin. Dalton Oborne was the other Cardinal winner.

Like Brodhead/Juda, East Troy fell behind early but could not muster a rally in losing a 49-24 semifinal match to Kewaskum. Chilton/Hilbert defeated Kewaskum 48-16 to win the Pewaukee Team Sectional.

The Trojans trailed 33-0 and could not recover. Andy Strey and Cody Vogel won by pins for East Troy.
