Milton collects regional golf title
JANESVILLE Milton High's quest for a third straight trip to the Division 1 girls state golf tournament got off to a good start Wednesday.
Thanks to a 77 from medalist Maddie McCue, the Red Hawks won the Janesville Craig Regional with a 329 score at Riverside Golf Course. Janesville Parker was second with 343 to automatically advance to Monday's Badger Sectional, along with Burlington (403) and Fort Atkinson (408).
Janesville Craig finished fifth, one spot away from qualifying for the sectional meet, but Ashley Hermanns and Hayley Arneson both advanced for the Cougars as additional qualifiers.
The top four teams and the top four individuals, who are not members of one of the top four teams, advanced to the sectional meet.
McCue, a sophomore, paced the Craig Regional with her 5-over par round. Teammates Stephanie and Laura Stair were right behind with an 81 and an 83, respectively. CheyAnn Knudsen rounded out the scoring for Milton with an 88.
Junior Micayla Richards had an 83 to pace Parker. Kailey McDade fired an 84, Taylor Wyss an 87 and Lindsey Ahrens an 89 to round out Parker's scoring.
"Today, we came out of a little slump that we've been having lately," Parker coach Mary Ross said. "We played with a lot of Parker pride today and had a real consistent round as a team.
"Our goal today was to break the school scoring record of 338, and we came close with a 343. Hopefully, we can build off of this and bring it to the sectional meet on Monday."
Abby Knutson shot 89 to lead Fort Atkinson.
In Division 2 play on Tuesday at Yahara Hills in Madison, Edgerton's Brooke Ferrell finished second overall to lead the Crimson Tide to a second-place finish at the Edgewood Regional. The host Crusaders won the meet with 311, while Edgerton was second at 360.
Ferrell shot a 74 to finish second to Edgewood's Lexi Greytak, who had 73. Other Edgerton scores were Lauren Splitter's 90, Shelby Weger's 92 and Erica Richardson's 104.
At the Prairie School Regional on Wednesday, East Troy's Ali Kruger and Morgan Woyak earned berths in the Little Chute Sectional as additional qualifiers.
