Cyborg Mitt fails to understand election situation

By KATHLEEN PARKER   Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012

— What’s a day without a leaked video, a scandal, an unintended sliver of truth?

OMG: Mitt Romney doesn’t care about the votes of the 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay federal income taxes and therefore don’t care much about his message of lower taxes.

Who. Knew?

Oh the umbrage, the unforced errors. How can we hand over the presidency to a man who cares so little about those who have no intention of voting for him?

Romney should know better. It’s not as though there was no precedent for this sort of thing. Four years ago, Barack Obama spoke candidly at a similar “private” fundraiser in San Francisco, saying that small-town Pennsylvania voters expressed their economic frustrations by clinging “to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them.”

A person running for president should keep his thinking cap more tightly affixed even when among his own kind, millionaires in Romney’s case. And he should make sure his facts are right. Although true that nearly 47 percent don’t pay income taxes, most do pay payroll taxes, as many have pointed out. Moreover, of the 18.1 percent of households that pay neither income nor payroll taxes, most are elderly or earn less than $20,000, according to the Tax Policy Center.

But it is also true that tax issues are of greater significance to those who see large chunks of income disappear from their checks each pay period. It’s easy to decide how much others should pay for your support when it’s not your money.

Still, Romney’s comments sounded callous and merciless, and will haunt him through the election. They also revealed something we hadn’t previously seen. Unguarded, Romney is no compassionate conservative. At his core, he is … a cyborg.

The human part of him may hop out of bed in the middle of the night to comfort someone in distress. Such stories abound. But the mechanical Romney on display in the video is strictly pragmatic. Problem: How to win presidential election. Solution: Focus on economy and ignore those who don’t pay any taxes.

But and alas, humans, not machines, vote and win elections. For good or ill, voters want their president to be caring if not paternal. Smart politicians return in kind: They hug strangers and pose for pictures; they kiss babies; the pros shed tears. In the absence of active tear ducts, the successful candidate has a sympathetic biography.

Romney is not that person. Dry-eyed and awkward, he was born lucky and seems to lack the empathy born of struggle.

It is factually true that those who receive government largesse are not wildly interested in a candidate who promises to cut entitlements, especially when he also wants to cut taxes for the rich. As Romney said, the entitled ones will never vote for him so “my job is not to worry about those people.”

Well, no, actually, this would not be his job as president, which, as everyone knows is also not what he meant. What he meant was he doesn’t plan to focus resources on voters who will never embrace his message.

What was clearly wrong—and perhaps telling—is the notion that all those Americans are on the dole, willingly or that they consider themselves “victims,” as Romney put it. Most of those people undoubtedly would love to have high-enough paying jobs to gripe about high taxes. Many would love to have jobs, period.

If only Cyborg Mitt had said it this way:

“I know that the 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay any federal income tax are not going to be moved by my message of lower taxes. Heck, they need jobs and income before they can enjoy the problem of a high tax rate. Because I can’t get their vote, I’m focusing on independents. But when I become president, my first priority will be to help all Americans get back to work so everyone can contribute. I believe that most people would rather earn their own keep, care for their families and enjoy the rewards of self-sufficiency.”

Wouldn’t even gazillionaires enjoy this bit of ideological largesse?

Based on my understanding of the man, this is likely what Human Romney believes and wishes he had said, but Machine Romney sees only numbers and problem-solving calculations. The immediate problem is how to win an election.

The issue going forth isn’t whether voters’ feelings are hurt. The question is whether the cyborg can see that the problems he’s solving actually involve people.

Far better then even I ever imagined! I mean this is just GREAT STUFF to watch! I thought I saw it all back in 2000 when John Kerry went on that staged duck hunting trip in OH to try and 'connect' with hunters. I mean that was thee moment where you just said CHA CHING...This guy is LOST. With Mittens it's like a one duck hunting trip after another every single day! This is SPECTACULAR stuff to watch!

They most certainly do need to eliminate allot of people on welfare. It is just that both sides of the political isle can't agree on how much.By the time they get "balanced" in any amount of redistribution,it is always the same thing.Redistributation into their pocket.
Their redistribution is designed to keep the extra gipig of trickle down economics in " power ".

ezoner,
A person, married with 3 kids, that had been working their $13 an hour job for 13 years lost his/her job for whatever reason. They were on unemployment for 2 years during which they took the only job they could get which only pays $9.75 per hour in the new American economy. The skills they have are out dated and out moded. Now that their unemployment benefits have run out, they're going to end up on welfare anyway. Why not allow them to go back to school, collect benefits while they better themselves and get a better job in the end while at the same time allowing a young single person that can afford to live on $9.75 per hour to take that job? All the waiver that the Governors asked for would be doing is allowing welfare money to be used like speicalized unemployment compensation. WIA and TAA already operate in this way. For all intents and purposes, it's just an expansion of those programs.

Motorman, you're last comment is spot on. The problem with American politics is that the redistribution of wealth and income is from lower and middle class persons to the ultra-wealthy. We need to reverse that, to reverse the growing gap in income and wealth disparity and start helping those who truly need it with housing, food, education and healthcare. Mitt Romney doesn't need tax breaks that allow him to pay a tax rate that is well under the percentage that people making well less than 1/100th of what he is earning are paying. The only problem with income and wealth redistribution in this country is the current direction of the redistribution. It needs to be reversed so it flows from ultra-wealthy to low and middle income.

Before you go blaming Bush again, let me tell you all something. Obama signed that first stimulus and promised the unemployment would not go above 8%. When, in 2009 they proudly declared "The recession is over", from that point on, they owned this economy. Their are two very big reasons he has failed. 1-Obamacare, 2-energy policy.
Two things Romney can address immediately for a recovery- finally.

Obama’s Trick to Get Around Work Requirements

The Obama Administration issued a new directive stating that the traditional TANF work requirements can be waived or overridden by a legal device called the section 1115 waiver authority under the Social Security law (42 U.S.C. 1315).

Section 1115 states that “the Secretary may waive compliance with any of the requirements”

My question is why? Why is Obama so motivated with getting as many people on government assistance as possible?
Clinton knew the program worked. It was bi-partisan.

Romney will fix it.

God people are dense and uninformed. The GOP are trying to block the President's changes to the work requirement because it was Obama's idea and for no other reason. Governors, both Repub and Dem, asked for this waiver because so many of their unemployed lack skill or the skills they have need to be updated. The previous requirement for federal money for welfare was that 50% of the recipients be working. What the waiver would allow is states to allow some unemployed to receive benefits while going to school to gain more skills to become more employable. In doing so their welfare caseload might end up having less than 50% working. That's why they wanted the waivers, and that's why the President went along with it. God forbid a good idea get implemented in government.

It is YOU who should be ashamed for your clouded inference that I should be.

I have NEVER said people should not get unemployment.....I do believe when they receive it for several years, they should be looking for work or pursuing additional training during that time. The work waiver from the welfare reforms championed under Clinton/republicans should stand.

Just like people who have paid into unemployement that now find themselves without a job. They are now getting the benefits of paying for those years. Only 1/3 of people on social security end up paying income tax so the majority 2/3rds are included in the group that is the 47%.

The Republicans give great lip service to support the troops when they are sending them off to war but it's a completely different story when they return physically and mentally maimed. Currently Republicans are blocking a bill that would help veterans when they return home. We can spare 8 billion to send them to war but we can't find any money to support them when they come home. Baratheon_Prince said, "poobah, respectfully, I can assume then that you are firmly against the use of no-fly zones..."

No, I'm not. My problem with the no-fly zones in Iraq is that they were never authorized by an international body AND without a formal declaration of war. We are supposed to be a nation of laws, not men, but our recent military actions around the world (since WW2 surely) appear to be as much the result of one man's agenda (the president at the time) than a formally declared war. Oh, Congress always manages to eventually get around to funding these undeclared wars, with much fanfare amidst a swell of patriotic fervor, but then again Congress is fairly good at funding just about anything if given the opportunity to borrow more money. And few politicians want to appear to not "support" our troops fighting to "defend our freedom." Even if that means funding a military action halfway around the world against a country that never was a threat to our security and freedom. Boutros Boutros-Gali, UN Secretary General at the time the NFZs were created (AFTER the first undeclared Gulf war) called the NFZs, "illegal" and not authorized by any UN resolution. These are some of the issues I had specifically with the Iraqi NFZs.

Since our country is structured in such a way that the military only acts as directed by those placed in charge by voters your views have little respect for actual events or conditions to events. These civilian government people then direct our nations policy to include where our aircraft are positioned and the mission they perform while there. I'm sure most every retired Air Force person should appreciate and respect the airspace rights of all countries. Iraq wasn't firing on American aircraft that were flying in American airspace. Our aircraft were flying in Iraqi airspace without Iraqi approval. Nations have a right under international laws to defend their territory. America, the UK and France unilaterally declared no-fly zones over Iraq without any international body authorizing such an action. Iraq was in accordance with international law in firing on the aircraft invading its airspace, indeed protecting the freedom and safety of their citizens from foreign threats. Those flights were not protecting the freedom and safety of Americans, they were endangering the freedom and safety of Iraqis.

Would you defend America firing on Chinese military aircraft flying into American airspace without approval of the American government? Of course you would. What's the difference when it comes to other countries like Canada or Iraq or Germany? I read an article about Romney and some of the benefits that he attended.$500.00 dollar a plate. And they aren't just giving it away either. They get it back more than what they put in.What is that called?Redistribution of wealth.
Nothing is wrong with making some donations. But when it is oxymoron to the event, then it is redistribution.Even if it is just a right off,it is still redistribution.
Romney isn't against redistribution. He is just comparing apples to oranges and saying that his way is better. We already know this.
Both sides need to quit calling the American people ignorant.Romney isn't against redistribution,he is just being hypocritical about it,which is the same thing if not worse because it is what amounts to double or nothing.Taking back twice as much as what you put in.
Both sides are calling the American people stupid. Are they on to something? Both sides are insinuating that all Americans should be on welfare. It is about them. They all want to redistribute the wealth. It's just about where.
Yet,the electorate collage continues to change definition so that they can continue to control by way of one or the other. It's as though they want to say that you are all so stupid that this is why they need to run things because you just don't get it.Yet not quite brave enough to just walk in and take it.They played you,and so for this, they need to take over.Theft by deception.

The others might still be going for the distract and cover up.

Yes, he sure did. A war in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. Both to defeat people his daddy and his daddy's buddy, Ronald Reagan, built up with arms and money in the 1980's and 1990's. Yeah, Saddam Hussein and the Taliban. Here's a link of a pic of Donald Rumsfeld smiling and shaking hands with Saddam just after handing over all sorts of military goodies to Saddam, if you're interested: [ http://0.tqn.com/d/politicalhumor/1/0/_/... ]

So yeah, Bush started two wars and gave us all a piece of the action in Iraq and Afghanistan. They figure it cost us about $1.37 trillion [ http://costofwar.com ]. How much did the Bush wars cost the people of Janesville? Take a look: [ http://costofwar.com/state/WI/city/janes... ]. Yeah, almost $240 million and counting and that's a conservative estimate. That's almost $3,800 for every man, woman and child in Janesville. Yeah, Bush sure did give us all a piece of that action, didn't he?

Of course, you won't mention the hundreds of thousands of people killed and maimed because of Bush's wars. Sadly, we all own a little piece of that too.

wislady, let's look back at these figures that you failed to comment on. Obama didn't build the bulk of the 47% non-payers. Look to your hero, George W. Bush, for that distinction. The country saw a 59% increase in non-payers under George W. Bush.

"Entering the 2000s with one in four tax filers owing nothing, the nonpayers pool was supercharged by the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003—especially by the doubling of the child credit to $1,000. By 2004, when the credit expansion was fully phased in, the number of nonpayers increased by 10.5 million, a 32-percent jump in the space of four years. In tax year 2008, the major tax change that created a record number of nonpayers was the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, which included a tax rebate of $300 per person, $600 per couple. A family of four was eligible for a rebate of $1,200. These tax rebates boosted the number of nonpayers to nearly 52 million, 19 million more than the number of nonpayers in 2000 when President Bill Clinton left office. This represents a 58.6 percent increase in the number of nonpayers in less than a decade. By contrast, the total number of tax filers grew by only 10 percent during the same period." As an Independent I agree that Romney made a mess of his speech in that edited, censored video created by Jimmy Carter's grandson. Surprise! Romney is right, though .. 99% of those people won't vote for Romney. So he told the truth.

As to Obama's claim on Letterman about Romney's mis-speak, that Obama has learned as President you have to be the President for ALL the people!

Really????

So when has Obama EVER looked out for the interests as the President of the wealthy, the successful, the business owners, and those in America who hold a different political view than his?

Midnight_Ride,
At first, I thought you were talking about the Bush administration. Why don't you compare where we are now to where we were headed when Obama took office? The recovery may be slow to this point, but at least we're recovering. You speak of failed foreign policy, but as far as I can see, Osama Bin Laden is dead. It is true, it would not have been possible if we didn't go to war with Afghanistan in the first place. For that, we could give some credit to GW. However, GW never got Osama Bin Laden. Why? Because he was more focused on Saddam Hussein. What did that guy have to do with September 11th again? Oh, right, absolutely nothing. But he had WMDs, right? No, that turned out not to be true, and based on sketchy intelligence in the first place? Hmm, interesting. Well he did try to kill George H.W. Bush, right? I guess that's why we invaded an entire country. Junior was just mad at someone who tried to kill his father. So, he dragged this entire nation into a war because of a personal grudge.

So, what of the protests that have been erupting in the Middle East? You know why there is such outrage, don't you? It's because of the perception of the United States abroad. People think we are cocky. People think we feel like we are allowed to police the world, go where we want, and do what we want. We present a challenge. Why do people feel that way? Recently, because we invaded Iraq for no real reason.

Here is the kicker: protests are spreading like wildfire because of a film that an individual made. Not because of something our U.S. government did. Yet, you hold this against the Obama administration. If Obama had the video censored, there would be (and rightfully so) complaints about censorship of freedom of speech. But the Obama administration decries this video itself, and says it is very distasteful. Who embraces the video? Those same people who, "cling to their guns and religion." Those people will vote for Romney. I know that doesn't mean that Romney necessarily agrees with the video, but again, it sends a message to foreign countries. So, if you want to talk about failed or poor foreign policy, I think you ought to take a look at the Republican party. They are most definitely a root cause here. The ironic thing is, all the gun and religion clinging Republicans have to do is release more video etc disrespecting the Muslim religion, and people like you will continue to say it is Obama's failed foreign policy causing violent protests.

"I believe that most people would rather earn their own keep, care for their families and enjoy the rewards of self-sufficiency.” This at least a true statement on Romneys part. The problem is that Republican and Romney/Ryan plan inhibits people to be able to do this. We all agree that education is key to getting out of poverty. Yet, The Romney/Ryan plan would make fewer students eligible for Pell money which is the only way some kids can afford college. Granted they don't plan to reduce the maximum amount granted via Pell grants which is currently at $5,500/yr. Lowering the amount of income a family can earn in order to qualify for a Pell grant will have the same effect, which is fewer middle and lower income students will be able to go to college. Looks like Kathleen Parker is one of the many prominent conservatives going after Mitt Romney today. Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard called Romney's comments "arrogant and stupid". Peggy Noonan of the Wall St Journal wrote, "It’s time to admit the Romney campaign is an incompetent one. It’s not big, it’s not brave, it’s not thoughtfully tackling great issues. It’s always been too small for the moment." Both senate candidate Linda McMahon of Connecticut and current Senator Scott Brown (currently running for reelection) of Massachusetts made it a point to release statements saying that Mitt Romney does not speak for them as Republicans. And these are just a few of the examples. This whole election thing really seems to be slipping away from Mitt Romney.

That's true, and we clearly know that Romney/Ryan not only support wealth redistribution, but they want to greatly EXPAND it. Their promises to EXPAND one of the greatest wealth redistribution scams ever devised by man -- spending of more than $700 billion per year on the U.S. military -- is ample evidence of that.

"The question is whether the cyborg can see that the problems he’s solving actually involve people." I get the impression that Mitt Romney is so eager to sit in the Oval Office leather chair that he'll say just about anything to ensure it happens. He'll get that self-satisfied look on his face that we've all grown used to. And none of us can really say what kind of president he'll make because he's so hard to pin down on policy. He's shown himself capable of flipping and flopping back and forth his entire political career. And it has been a political career, even though he likes to give the American public the impression that he's just going to be president as a kind of charity act: "I don't NEED to do this public service stuff, I'm perfectly happy to be a wealthy private citizen with private offshore bank accounts and trust funds...blah blah blah." Depending on his audience he will concentrate on one of three areas: his time as a MA governor, his time with the SLC Olympic Committee, or his time at Bain Capital. It is up to voters to decide what kind of chief executive he will make. And most voters have already made up their minds at this point. I know I have.

Nice try wislady. The right wing fringe changes the subject when their candidate puts his foot in his mouth, though we all already know how the "elite" feel about the common man, don't we?
