President Barack Obama gestures as he speaks about the choice facing women in the upcoming election, Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at a campaign event at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

— Unemployment rates fell last month in nearly all of the battleground states that will determine the presidential winner, giving President Barack Obama fresh fodder to argue that voters should stick with him in an election focused squarely on the economy.

The declines, however, were modest. It's unknown whether they will do much to sway undecided voters who are considering whether to back Republican Mitt Romney or give the Democratic president four more years.

The statewide data released by the Labor Department on Friday provide one of the last comprehensive looks at the health of the U.S. economy ahead of Election Day, now a little more than two weeks away. Voters will get one more update on the national unemployment rate just days before the election. But the state reports matter greatly to the Obama and Romney campaigns, which believe the public's impressions of the economy are shaped mostly by local conditions rather than national ones.

In Ohio, perhaps the most crucial battleground state for both Obama and Romney, the unemployment rate ticked down last month to 7 percent from 7.2 percent, below the national average of 7.8 percent.

"I knew a lot of people who were laid off and now they're working," said firefighter Matt Sparling, an Obama supporter from Parma Heights, Ohio. "So something good is happening here."

Obama's team is banking on the president getting credit for improvements in Ohio's economy, particularly for the bailout of the auto industry, which has deep roots in the Midwestern swing state. But Romney has opportunities to run on the economy in Ohio, too. The state actually lost nearly 13,000 jobs in September and the drop in the unemployment rate was probably due in part to people dropping out of the job market.

The president didn't mention the state jobless numbers during a campaign stop Friday in Virginia, one of two battleground states where the rate didn't drop. It held steady at the relatively low level of 5.9 percent.

Spirited on other topics, Obama quipped in a raucous rally at George Mason University that a case of "Romnesia" was preventing his opponent from remembering his own stances on health care, energy and a slate of policies.

"He's forgetting what his own positions are — and he's betting that you will, too," Obama said. "We've got to name this condition that he's going through. I think it's called Romnesia."

Romney was headlining a rally in Florida Friday evening after spending much of the day in New York meeting with advisers.

The candidates were stepping off the campaign trail this weekend for debate preparations ahead of Monday's third and final face-off in Boca Raton, Fla. Romney was staying in South Florida to practice, while Obama and top aides headed to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, to prepare for the foreign policy-focused debate.

International issues competed with the economy for voters' attention Friday, as fresh questions arose over what the White House knew when about the deadly attack on Americans in Libya.

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions.

"His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Romney and Ryan have criticized the administration for saying at first that the attack was a spontaneous mob reaction to an anti-Muslim video on YouTube when they now acknowledge it was a terrorist attack. U.S. officials told The Associated Press that the CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of the attack to say there was evidence it was carried out by militants, although it's unclear who received that information right away.

Despite increased focus on Libya, the economy remains the No. 1 election issue for most voters.

Friday's jobs report showed the unemployment rate falling slightly in seven battleground states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin. Rates held steady at 5.7 percent in New Hampshire and 5.9 percent in Virginia. Unemployment in both states has long been well below the national average.

Nevada's 11.8 percent rate is the highest nationally. Iowa has the lowest battleground state rate, with 5.2 percent out of work.

Obama has staked his re-election prospects on the notion that the economic crisis he inherited is easing. He's been backed by positive trends for a handful of recent economic indicators, as well as polls showing the public's view of the economy is improving.

But millions of Americans are still out of work, giving Romney an opportunity to cast the president as ineffective in solving the country's economic troubles. Romney, too, has plenty of economic data to back up his argument, including disappointing earnings reports Friday from major companies, including Microsoft and McDonald's.

Both campaigns say the last round of data released ahead of Election Day is unlikely to sway voters who have been living the reality of the economic downturn and weak recovery for more than four years.

John Patterson, 25, a recent college graduate from North Carolina, said he doesn't have to look at unemployment numbers to know things aren't good in his home state. He's sent out resumes and had a few interviews but is still unemployed.

Patterson voted for Obama four years ago, but says he's not sure he'll do the same this time around.

"Things haven't really changed, have they?" he said. "I mean, too many people are still out of work."

Back in Ohio, Dianna Huddleston said the falling unemployment rate has done little to help her personal economic situation. Her husband lost his jobs a few years back when an aluminum producer in the region cut back. He eventually found work as a dishwasher, Huddleston said, but that position comes with much lower pay.

Huddleston says she doesn't plan to vote in the presidential election because "nothing is going to change here."

Rugaber reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Nedra Picker in Washington, Ken Thomas in Fairfax, Va., and Emery Dalesio in Raleigh, N.C., contributed to this report.

RIGHT ON RIGHT ON.
Gotta love how CPI does not account for food or energy. Nope; there is ZERO inflation here in the US when gas and food sky rockets up (as a result of a debased $$ because we print more and more)..Nope that won't effect ANYONE (uh huh)....Yet, the price of your I-phone may go down in price as China can crank those babies out cheaper and cheaper.

I hope that was a joke?
The Germans are the ones who are carrying the ENTIRE LOAD for the whole free loading EU. It is Germany who is supporting ALL the bankrupt nations like Greece, Spain, Italy, France, and on down the line. The people there are beyond pissed about this policy where they do all the work-production to bailout all the free loaders in Europe. Whether the German people support Obama. Who freaking knows, or cares? Do people in the US support Angela Merkel? 90+% of the population here would not even know who that is.

GDP 1.3%=Wisconsin is healing if progressives do decide to leave it a lone. Obama ordered the tear down of General Motors. Our plant went.

WSJ's John Stoll discusses the Obama administration's plans for General Motors and Chrysler. With billions of dollars of taxpayer money on the line, John says the administration intends to work closely with GM to forge a more dramatic restructuring for the company.

Obama Gives Auto Makers an Ultimatum
GM on Monday said it will address "the tough issues to improve the long-term viability of the company," including the restructuring of its financial obligations, as it responded to Washington's calls for stronger plans to stay afloat.

The administration says a "surgical" structured bankruptcy may be the only way forward for GM and Chrysler, and President Obama held out that prospect Monday.

"I know that when people even hear the word 'bankruptcy,' it can be a bit unsettling, so let me explain what I mean," he said. "What I am talking about is using our existing legal structure as a tool that, with the backing of the U.S. government, can make it easier for General Motors and Chrysler to quickly clear away old debts that are weighing them down so they can get back on their feet and onto a path to success; a tool that we can use, even as workers are staying on the job building cars that are being sold."

We're no longer fighting in Iraq, as Obama promised. But its true, we're still paying off the loans for two Bush wars. If not for a republican controlled house, tax rates wouldn't be the same -- for millionaires. They'd be higher where they were under Clinton when our economy was doing well. And unemployment rates being a joke? They're being measured as they were under Bush II. Just one big difference -- under Obama we're not losing 800,000 jobs per month like we were under Bush II. Let's not return to the same old failed Bush/Romney policies that caused the mess left for Obama.

Jobless rate is a joke right now. It doesnt consider those that have dropped out of the workforce and also includes volunteer work (unpaid). So the number is not representative of what is actually going on.

You know what I find interesting? bowlgal made a comment at 4:59 this morning about her 65 year old mother who, "was just told due to Obamacare she is no longer covered for cervical cancer screening." And since the time of bowlgal's posting, which is now over seven hours ago, many conservatives have made comments including donnaw, Midnight_Ride and wislady and not one of those comments dealt with bowlgal's mother or offered suggestions on possible available solutions. In fact, the only comment offering advice was from a progressive liberal.

What happened to that supposedly compassionate conservative belief that people look out for each other? These conservatives are too busy bashing Obama and the very programs that could help bowlgal's mother, instead of offering advice to bowlgal. Compassionate conservatism - possibly the greatest oxymoron of modern times.

We know that bowlgal's mother's situation has nothing to do with ObamaCare. Medicare Part B covers cervical cancer screenings and there is premium assistance available for people that qualify if they can not afford the $99 premium on Part B.

No, that $716 billion represents savings in reduced costs, not benefits, that, quite tellingly, were also a major part of the Paul Ryan budget proposal! A proposal, by the way, that did not provide the additional benefits of ObamaCare. The Medicare cost reductions are a Republican idea and ObamaCare is modeled after RomneyCare! Your mother apparently elected to not carry Medicare Part B, which fully covers cervical cancer screenung. If she did that because she can't afford the $99 per month Part B premium, she should contact the state to see if she qualifies for Part B payment assistance. Pap tests/pelvic exams (screening)

How often is it covered?

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers pap tests/pelvic exams:

- Once every 24 months for all women

- Once every 12 months if you’re at high risk for cervical or vaginal cancer, or if you’re of childbearing age and have had an abnormal Pap test in the past 36 months

Who's eligible?

All women with Medicare are covered.

Your costs in Original Medicare

It would be very, very scary for Mittster Romney to lead the nation.
He has ZERO foreign policy experience -- and a controlling and bad temper -- ready to lead us into yet another unnecessary and costly war.
Review Obama and Romney's foreign policy achievements.

Foreign Policy Achievements
Obama:
Led the killing of Osama Bin Laden
Improved US relationships with most allies
Directed killing of several leaders of Al Qaida
Implemented harsh sanctions on Iran
Supported removal of dictator Gaddhafi from power in Libya

Romney:
Opened a Swiss bank account to bet against America
Opened a Cayman Islands bank account to bet against America
Opened a Bermuda bank account to bet against America
Infuriated European leaders with his rude comments and 2012 visit.
As soon as Libya consulate attacked, issued press release and tries to try to score political points.

onedayatatime: My comment was for both parties to represent everyone. Not just the Democrats. Neither party represents the vast majority of Amercans imo. Moderates on either side do not make it through their own primary so we are faced in November with voting for a far left or far right candidate or voting for a Libertarian candidate in protest or not voting at all. I do not support the obstructionism. Nor do I support the ramming through of the AHCA which did not even include the public mandate or interstate shopping for insurance that would have helped. I support many aspects of it but the harsh consequences including taxes on middle class (penalties called taxes by the Supreme Court to find it constitutional) do not kick in until after this election and the election in 2014. Actually very clever politically for them to front load it with the good aspects and back load it after the next 2 elections with the stuff that will hit the fan. Just sad that, when he had control of both sections of Congress in the first two years, he did not push through many of his other policies including immigration reform, 50% reduction in the deficit, etc. Burned up all his political capital on the AHCA. I personally think that neither party is interested in what is best for this country as their prime concern. Think their prime concern is getting reelected. We need term limits, we need to change the electoral college system so that, at a minimun, it's votes would be divided based on percentage won in each state by the candidates. Then at least the candidates would have to work for votes in all 50 states and represent all 50 states instead of flying over 40 or so of them and letting 10 states determine the future of the entire country. However, changes to the constitution in term limits or in electoral college procedures would require passage by congress followed by ratification in the majority of states. Not going to happen since it does not benefit the 535 politicians in Congress and the President. Tired by the way of hearing how the rich lobbyists on either side are responsble for our mess. Bottom line is there are 435 congresspersons and 100 senators that make law, 1 President that signs laws, and 9 justices that determine the constituionality of those laws. It is ultimately the job of those 545 people to say no to the lobbyists instead of basically accepting bribes. So we will continue to follow down the path of creating an economy similar to Greece and Spain. I am old enough and lived within my means so will survive financially. I fear, however, for my children, grandchildren, nieces and newphews, and their children. IMHO

They planned on obstructing everything President Obama planned to do that might help the country in order to fulfill that goal. They were willing to see the country faulter even more rather than see Obama succeed. That should tell you right there the party is more important to them than the country. I realize those on the right have a problem understanding statistics, what the heck,I will present them, with references, for those who are capable of critical thinking. This data is from 2009 and we have only continued to improve since then, albeit slow but things are improving. It took 11 years to recover from the Great Depression and that was with a strong manufacturing base and demand caused by WWII. For people to believe we could dig ouselves out of the hole that Republican policies caused, in just 4 years is not realistic, even if we had a Congress that would work together.
(GDP) grew by 3.5% in the third quarter of 2009. The passage of the ARRA added 2.7% GDP growth in the 3rd quarter of 2009. It has cumulatively added a full 1.6% to GDP since it was passed."ARRA expenditures and tax-cuts—suggests that the recovery package has substantially boosted economic growth and created or saved 1.1 to 1.5 million jobs since its passage." http://www.epi.org/publication/ib265/

The top 1% has seen an increase of 281% in income from 1979 to 2007, whereas the middle quintile (where most of us fall) saw only 25% growth. This has been reversed in the last five years with middle income people seeing only 4.9%. http://www.offthechartsblog.org/top-ten-...
The top 20% hold 95% of the nations wealth leaving only 5% for the remaining 80% to share. http://www2.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/pow...

You wonder why the wealthy should pay more in taxes...THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN AFFORD IT. Yet Romney wants to lower the Capital gains tax to 0. Capital gains was his income in 2011 (20 million to be exact)for which he only paid 14%. If he gets his way he would pay NOTHING. It seems the wealthy want all of the benefits of living in this country and the opportunities it provides but they want you and I to pay for it while they put absolutely nothing back into the country, kind of the way he got wealthy in business.
brotherkoch is right, you can remain pawns of the wealthy and keep defending and figthing thier battles for them all the while you are digging yourselves into a deeper hole. They're laughing all the way to the banks about how stupid and easily manipulated the "common" people are.

in 2008, President-elect Obama had no real foreign policy experience. No different than Mr. Romney now. Started getting his experience by going on a world wide apology tour for the negative things the U.S.A. had done. His wife, either after her husband was selected as the Democratic nominee or after he was elected President, said she was finally proud to be an American citizen. WHAT ???? Why was she living here before then if she was so ashamed to be American. I truly hoped that President Obama would bring the hope and change he promised and bring the country back to the middle. Did not happen. He spent 4 years as the POTDP (president of the democratic party) instead of POTUS (president of the UNITED states). Regardless of which party you are from, you are supposed to represent all the people in your district, be you in congress or the President. Granted you will lean towards your party's idealogy but you still have a duty to all citizens. I have to agree with the earlier poster that stated his opinion that it will make no difference which of the 2 are elected .... They will not work together much to the detriment of our nation and the future of our children and grandchildren. I cast my absentee ballot some time ago but with great difficulty. Perhaps my vote will make a difference on some of the local races because it makes no difference at the presidential level either way because my state is not one of the 9 or so in play.

bowlgal,
Why is it so important to you that the US controls what goes on in the Middle East? Is it important to you in the same way that it's important to corporate America and its protectors in the government? It's important to them because of oil, plain and simple. The oil industry is very profitable and it is very important to the oil industry that the government try to maintain a stable Middle East for no other reason than to maintain their large profits. That is why the American dependence on foreign oil must be eliminated. We have seen huge increases in domestic drilling under President Obama. That's great but we also need much more investment in alternative energy sources. Then we could scale back our diplomatic and military presence in a region of the world that continues to be unstable due to both cultural factors and the simple fact that the US continues to force itself upon them. Why are we putting American citizens in danger for acting as little more than security guards for the profits of companies owned by people that are already unimaginably rich? Because those rich people can afford to donate to enough politicians to make sure that the US maintains a presence in the Middle East that is disproportionate to the actual benefits felt by the average American citizen from that presence.

He talks about how manufacturing remains strong there while the labor market is also diversifying. Meanwhile, the Romney campaign is trying to tell Ohioans how bad they are doing. Also, it's important to remember that the government intervention that Mitt Romney was against saved 154,000 jobs in Ohio alone according to the Center for Automotive Research. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has also reported that since June, 2009 13,000 jobs have been added in Ohio in the auto manufacturing, car parts manufacturing and car & parts dealer sectors.

916WI,
Let me break some numbers down for you.
According to the Pew Research Center, On Jan. 1, 2011 the oldest members of the Baby Boomers started turning 65. An average of 10,000 Boomers have been turning 65 every day since Jan 1, 2011 and will continue to do so for the next 17 years or so. That's around 304,000 people per month. Given that Ohio's percentage of the US population is about 3.7% that would put their number of citizens turning 65 every month at a little over 11,000. Also, the percentage of Ohioans that were already 65 or older as of 2011 was higher than the national percentage (14.3% to 13.3% according to the US Census bureau), so it is, in fact, a reasonable argument to say that if a reduction in the unemployment rate is being attributed to people leaving the labor force, a large percentage of those people are retirees.

"The state actually lost nearly 13,000 jobs in September and the drop in the unemployment rate was probably due in part to people dropping out of the job market."
This doesn't really sound like good news......does it??

Feduptaxpayer, this article isn't about what I'll do after the election. It's about unemployment rates falling again in nearly all of the battleground states. That's certainly good news for all Americans.

wislady said, "4 Americans are dead from Benghazi Gate, and Obama is still making jokes.

Repulsive."

Four Americans are dead as a result of the embassy attack and wislady is still treating the tragedy as a political wedge issue in hopes of garnering a few extra votes for Romney/Ryan instead of pulling together as our nation does during times of loss.

Repulsive.

You may recall yesterday I posted the Gallup unemployment survey. Gallup started collecting unemployment survey data in January 2010 and has been very accurate when compared to subsequent BLS data. Here's a summary of their mid-October report which closely mirrors the BLS data seen in the swing states on a nationwide basis:

"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, is 7.3% in mid-October, down considerably from 7.9% at the end of September and at a new low since Gallup began collecting employment data in January 2010. Gallup's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 7.7%, also down from September. October's adjusted mid-month measure is also more than a percentage point lower than October 2011." Tagg Romney is not running as the presidential candidate. He is a private citizen.
How about Biden's comment (I think he is on the ticket with Obama)...

"unfortunately, those bullets are aimed at you,"

Back to Bush again, and NO, Obama did not come clean on Benghazi the next day. Is it any wonder he is losing support, as he continues his lies. He thinks he can make jokes and just laugh his way through this.
News flash...Obama has been in the WH for almost 4 years. The apprenticeship is over.

wislady has romnesia too.....she forgets that Bush ignored 6mo of warnings before 911 happened. Then, he lied to get us in Iraq so many others could die for his agenda. We only got to hear more facts about that mess this year. How many years did that news take to get out in the open??? Obama told 60 minutes and the public the next day about the acts of terror. So, wislady, get help for your romnesia...

So you take no issue with Obama administration "cooking the books" to make unemployment numbers look better before the election?

How long before they correct the number, now that California has reported their data?

House Speaker John Boehner issued a statement saying, "There's no way in hell "that one" could have reduced the unemployment rate. I mean we have done absolutely everything in our power to ensure he couldn't make a single move that would help the economy or American workers. It's simply not possible.

Why is it the left fringe, who are blind followers of this admin, attempt to defend him by claiming others are blind followers of "blank"? Just more of the same from the party of do as I say not as I do.

I just love the way the righties grab onto Rushes monthly pet words and phrases and run with them. It is as if they wait for the chunky drug addict to bring the tablets down from the mount before they can take a position on any issue. "minions"....gotta love it! I wonder what is next for his legion of blind followers?

"Despite increased focus on Libya, the economy remains the No. 1 election issue for most voters." You would think listening to Obama and his minions the only thing people cared about was taxing the rich...?
