— Craig High's boys cross country team headed into the Big Eight Conference cross country meet believing it could successfully defend its league title Monday at the Yahara cross country course.

Spencer Hrycry finished fifth for Craig, covering the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 18.18 seconds, as the Cougars finished third with 116 points.

Madison West landed two runners in the top five and four in the top 10 for 38 points to take the conference championship by one point over Madison La Follette.

"We probably finished where some outsiders had us ranked," Craig coach Brian Lawton said. "In house, we felt like we had a chance to win again."

Chandler Diffee of La Follette, the reigning state and Big Eight champ, crossed the finish line in 15:53.76 for the repeat title. Ryan Nameth of Verona finished second in 16:02.77.

Hrycry earned first-team all-conference. Teammates Evan Lalor and Hunter Salmon earned second-team recognition after finishing 11th and 14th, in 16:43 and 16:51, respectively.

"As a whole, they will tell you they ran pretty average," Lawton said. "Being the defending conference champs they hoped to perform better than a solid third."

Dane Tyler of Parker finished 12th in 16:49 for second-team all-league recognition The Vikings' Keegan McClusky took 18th in 17:11 for a second-team spot. Parker's boys finished eighth as a team.

In the girls meet, Parker finished sixth and Craig was eighth. Madison West won the title with 37 points to Middleton's 48 for a Regent meet sweep.

Sun Prairie freshman Kate Hietpas won the 4,000-meter girls race in 14:48.73, while Gina Sereno of West took second in 14:59.38.

Miranda Slaback of Parker took 15th in 15:53.74 for second-team all-league honors and the top Janesville girls finish. Elizabeth Maginot finished 28th in 16:30 to lead Craig runners.

Craig and Parker compete Saturday in the Verona sectional.
