— Craig Evans and Devin Webster made life miserable for Parker High Friday night.

The stout tandem spearheaded Sun Prairie’s defense to shut out the Vikings, 40-0, and clinch at least a share of the Big Eight Conference title with its 7-0 record.

The third-ranked Cardinals can claim the title outright in their regular-season finale at Madison East next week.

Meanwhile, Parker (2-5) will close out the season against Craig on Friday.

“Sun Prairie is definitely good,” Parker coach Eric Skryzpchak said. “They were physical. They got off the ball and their linebackers flew to the ball.”

Evans, a 6-foot-3, 350-pound University of Wisconsin recruit, and the 6-2, 300-pound Webster derailed Parker’s inside running attack from their tackle positions and helped limit Parker to zero yards of total offense.

To make matters worse, the Vikings lost three fumbles, including Malik Bondon’s recovery at the Parker 11-yard line, which the junior returned for a touchdown to push the Sun Prairie lead to 26-0 midway through the second quarter.

“We’ve got it clicking on all cylinders,” Sun Prairie coach Brian Kaminski said. “Our defense is phenomenal. They are an athletic bunch. We wanted to stop their run tonight, and I think we were able to control the line of scrimmage and eliminate big plays.”

Parker managed just two first downs, with one coming off a penalty against the Cardinals.

With Parker’s offense shut down, Donte Starlin-Merriam sparked the Cardinals’ offense with 90 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 21 and 14 yards, on their opening two drives of the game.

Quarterback Ryan Curran completed 10 of 13 passes for 110 yards for Sun Prairie and closed out the first half with a 20-yard pass to tight end Devan Ziegal on a crossing pattern for a 33-0 lead with 47 seconds remaining.

“I am frustrated,” Skryzpchak said. “We asked the kids to work hard on every play and to look in mirror, ‘can you say you gave a 100 percent?’ That’s what we are asking for and we are looking to improve every day and for our guys to give 100 percent effort.”
