One poor stretch zaps Parker boys
JANESVILLE The Janesville Parker boys basketball team is improving.
Yet, the Vikings still aren't strong enough to get past eight-time defending Big Eight Conference champion Madison Memorial.
The visiting Spartans used a late second-quarter run to take command and went on to down the Vikings, 57-45, in a Big Eight Conference boys basketball game Thursday night.
Parker stuck with the Spartans (2-0), but could not overcome Memorial's height advantage and depth.
"We played them pretty tough," Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. "The key stretch was in the second quarter."
The Vikings trailed, 14-11, entering the second quarter, and were within range until Memorial ran off late to build a 29-17 halftime lead.
"They only outrebounded us, 32-29, so we were right with them," Masterson said. "But they had seven offensive rebounds in the second quarter, which helped them build their lead."
Parker matched Memorial in the second half, 28-28.
The Spartans had five players who were 6-foot-5 or taller, but the smaller Vikings stayed with them.
"Adam Thompson again did a nice job of handling their pressure," Masterson said of his 5-10 junior guard. "They threw a lot of different looks and kept throwing different players at him."
Cavann Conley, a 6-2 senior forward, led Parker's inside game.
"Conley did a nice job both inside and outside matching their height," Masterson said.
Conley finished with 10 points, while Thompson had nine.
Brendan Ortiz led Memorial with 12 points, while Julian Walters had 10.
The Vikings, now 0-2 in the Big Eight and 1-2 overall, play at Middleton on Saturday night.
"I told the team they made improvement from Game 1 to Game 2 and from Game 2 to Game 3," Masterson said. "We're definitely making progress."
