Janesville shoppers: TVs today, Thanksgiving whenever
Photo
JANESVILLE The retailers were right.
People will skip Thanksgiving if it means they can get a good deal on a television.
At 4 p.m. Thursday, a line of about 30 people were waiting outside of Kmart.
At 5:30 p.m., the line at Sears was up to about 50.
The rest of the day, plenty of other retailers were setting up barriers in anticipation of crowds that would be arriving at any moment.
Shawna and Tony Multon of Janesville had already played the waiting game once with success.
They arrived at Kmart at 9 p.m. Wednesday for the first round of bargains, which began at 6 a.m. Thursday.
At stake was a 50-inch flat screen television originally priced at $699. The first 15 people in line were able to pick it up for $288.
They were 14th in line.
Now, with the sun setting in a blaze of pink behind Slumberland and Hobby Lobby—both closed—they were waiting for a chance to pick up a 32-inch television for $97.
“People think we’re crazy now, but they won’t think we’re crazy when they see what we got,” Shawna Multon said.
Shawna Multon was resting on an inner tube sled, while others were using the more traditional folding canvas armchairs.
Tony Multon was wearing insulated work overalls and a matching jacket, looking quite comfortable. Despite having spent nearly 24 hours in front of Kmart, they were cheerful.
“We’ve met some of the nicest people,” Tony Multon said.
Well, not everybody was so nice.
The management came out and passed out cookies. Some of the people who didn’t make the cut for the big televisions started throwing cookies toward the front of the line.
Others, who missed the ad’s small print, gathered in groups outside the doors at 6 a.m. and seemed to think they would be able to rush the doors. The disclaimer said that tickets would be issued to the first people in line.
Was it worth giving up Thanksgiving for a stint outside of Kmart?
“It was worth giving up Thanksgiving for our kids’ Christmas,” said Tony Multon.
Kelly Maynard of Janesville was second in line. His spouse wasn’t happy about it, but the family decided to have Thanksgiving on Saturday instead.
Gander Mountain was open all day—just as it was last year.
“We were pretty busy this morning,” said Lindsay Stutzman, a zone manager for the store. By 5 p.m., the atmosphere in the store was relaxed, with shoppers browsing and the clerks making friendly conversation.
There were plenty of sales but no lines.

First of all frogger, I apologise for saying what I did about you helping out and then speaking of it. It was uncalled for and stupid and you have a right to be proud of what help you give.
Now, I will only say, you don't know if any of those in line were getting 3 tvs while getting assistance unless you asked them and/or they told you. You were assuming. It, of course, would be abuse if it were true.
Let's not argue any more; just do what we can for those who deserve it.
Truce.

Nope guess not.
I believe the original point was how can people who are on assistance buy these tvs? Since 40% of households are on assistance that means some of those in line would be on assistance. Do you think that is incorrect?
Yes I donate and what is wrong with saying so. I wont get into the exact details of what I do.
I just assume a person like you who complains about me thinks I am mean. I am not mean. You too said you were tired of abusers. I would say if you are on assiatance in line for 3 tv's there is abuse. Money for TV while tax payers flip the bill for everything else. When abuse stops I will be dine and now Obama four more years it will not get any better!!!

frogger- "Are you saying that nobody at Walmart would be on assistance?" How'd you come up with that??
frogger- "I am done now."
But you weren't done. You went on the list several links related to (mainly) the woman in California waiting in line at Best Buy, (She was the EXCEPTION waiting in line for a whole week! That's why she was in national news! And what does that have to with welfare??) and then you offered more links for other big box stores who had people stand in line on Black Friday. Why? What did that have to do with it? No kidding there were lines! All over the country.
And what do you think of these merchants you all patronized who encouraged these lines?
Funny, but the subject I brought up was your demeaning stereotyping of anyone on public assistance of any kind, not people who wait in line, no matter what we think of them, for cut-rate merchandise. As a matter of fact, YOU were among them. Did I make fun of you, or assume you were getting assistance? I even told you it was none of my business.
But, you say, 40% of them must be on assistance. I'm sure they shared that with you. So, I assume, 40% of everyone who goes to Saks Fifth Avenue is on public assistance. The scum. And 40% of people flying the dreamliner to Paris are on public assistance. The lowlifes! And I guess 40% of people who take a card off the angel tree only to brag about it then belittle the recipients must be getting help of some kind, too. The two-faced attention seeking braggarts! Big stinking deal! Anyone on that list sound familiar? I've met enough the last group to know that the ones who mention it are doing it for one reason only. So they can brag about it. The ones who do it secretly are the ones who sincerely want to help.
Ok, I'm done now :-) I've met enough of your type to last me a lifetime. I'd much rather break bread with someone getting public assistance. I'll take my chances on why they're doing what they're doing.

okay since you say I make up stuff. Here is one article. IF you have a job wouldn't you be at work for the week? If you take vacat pay to get a deal on a TVV you have different issue. Seems they get enough free food too!

"And you said you were in line inside...how long did you have to wait to get that coveted spot? "
we walked in Walmart when they opened at 8 pm- no line. Then we looked around for about 30 minutes then we went to our "laptop line" for 1 hr 30 minutes.
I am done answering question about people who abuse the system. I take no assistance. 40% is 4 of every 10 households. So if a huge group of people are at The Walmart I would say some people would be there who are on assistance. Are you saying that nobody at Walmart would be on assistance? That statement is more silly sounding than mine. I am sure the guy who punched the other guy in the face to steel his nook from him is a well paid hard working- pos of a person. Yep I will assume he is on assistance since he thinks he is entitled to the nook even though somebody else already had it in their hands and waiting in line patiently. I am done now.

frogger explains: "you will read about a women standing at best buy a week ahead."
To most people, she looks like a fool, but was she asked if she was on some sort of assistance? After all, some people who are well to do get that way by pinching pennies and sometimes go to great lengths to do so. Your original statement "no job so how can they afford a tv. If you wait in line for a week I would assume no job." implied it was a common practice among people getting assistance. When asked about "a week", you cite that one instance in some store, somewhere, and that lady wasn't allowed to stay. I call that exaggeration on your part.
And you said you were in line inside...how long did you have to wait to get that coveted spot? You had to be in line at least 8 days! Sorry, I pulled a frogger-(an old saying I just made up.)
You explain "Why do we assume no job? Again if you read news 40% of households ARE on assistance. Now how many PEOPLE is that- a lot!!"
No kidding it's a lot, but your assumption continues; you imply that if they are in line at Best Buy (or somewhere) on Black Friday, they must be receiving some benefits...(except you, I might add), waiting to spend their vast entitlements on TVs. Did you do a survey while you were in that line, or did they all see a frog on their backs (another old saying I just made up) and offer you that info? Or are you assuming 40% of any group of people anywhere must be on benefits? Is that what you mean?
Then, in your diatribe against people receiving assistance, you bring up the guy who bought the 50 inch TV and left his son in the store....you know for a fact it was someone receiving some benefits? Then why do you include him in your welfare story? He might have just been a jerk of a father, maybe even a well to do one trying to pinch pennies... Those no good rich ********.
Tell me what you really think about people who need help. I certainly can't guess.

ru-read the news and you will read about a women standing at best buy a week ahead. They kicked her out. She went to a different best buy. I believe the best buy here was day before thur.
Why do we assume no job? Again if you read news 40% of households ARE on assistance. Now how many PEOPLE is that- a lot!! This happens long enough and the kids think this is how it is supposed to be and the circle goes on and on. So again answer the question- why do we pay for all their stuff when they seem to find enough for cel phone bills- smart phones- NOT just regular cell phone- 100's a month on tv plan - not the basic- nails done- tanning? So free services so you can contunially buy things you cannot afford. Oh another story- Walmart somewhere- guy buys a 50" and forgets the kid at the store.

frogger...where did you see people standing in line for a WEEK?
And, what I was saying was...it seemed to me, by many of the posts, that those posters, yourself included, assumed that because these people who were standing in line (except the posters who were in line themselves)were waiting to spend as little as they could on a huge tech deal, and so, of course (through some strange reasoning) they were on some sort of assistance and certainly held no job. Why did you, and others, assume that?
And...who wouldn't be frustrated by people who PURPOSELY held no job, or HAPPILY stayed on some form of government assistance, spending that money on frivolous stuff?? BUT...you assume that EVERYONE in those circumstances is satisfied with their lot in life, and that money is flowing into their pockets like a waterfall. Why do you think that? Talk about frustating! Nothing could be further from the truth in the majority of cases. Most people getting assistance (unless truely physical unable through advanced age, injury or illness) work as hard as you and I do, but for various reasons need outside help. And our 10 year old tvs would be a luxury item. I'm not blind, I know there are the kinds out there that frustrate you (and me), but if you lump everyone together by some preconceived ideas, then there is no hope.

Again my comment was in reference to another poster saying that it is a good thing for those with no job to wait in line to buy a cheap tv because money is tight. My response is if money is do tight don't buy a tv. Also how bad do you need government assistance if you can afford the newest technology??

I was in a line inside. I think the point is some people were making is- no job so how can they afford a tv. If you wait in line for a week I would assume no job.
I also waiting 10 years for my new tv. How many on UC get a new tv more often than that but cannot feed their family then get $150 a month for cable or dish? They can find money for this but the TAXPAPYER pays for their food, clothes, gifts for kids, medical care. That is frustrating. What is so hard to grasp about that. Yes I help but the parents frustrate me!

frogger?? I certainly didn't ask you to explain what you were doing there, nor did I even speculate. It's non of my d*** business. If you (or anyone) has the fortitude to stand in those long, cold lines, I admire it.
And...it never occurred to me, reading those posts, that people were only demeaning those people who waited for TVs. But looking back at them I guess it could look that way. Really?
It's respectable for those buying other technology, or other goods at midnight on Black Friday, but buying TVs apparently indicate you're on welfare or aid, are trailer trash, and certainly don't have a job.
We have a tv. It's 32 inch. We haven't bought a new one in 10 years. It's the size of a large microwave or small car. We probably looked for the best deal possible at the time. We've considered looking for a new, flat screen at a good price. We have more than one tv.
Now, do any of those points make me trailer trash? A respectable citizen? Which one? Has nothing to do with it? I didn't think so. Get my point?

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Would they be surprised if they got their way and the checks stopped coming?
I am guessing that they would be surprised.

illdrinktothat...I'll drink to that! I never knew such hate existed for our fellow man and those less fortunate until I started reading these comments a few years ago. Maybe I was running around with the right crowd.
Who does Black Friday most benefit anyhow? These people trying to get a deal? Not so much as those who are trying to get rich selling to them. And is it not intended to put the retailer in the BLACK for the year? But who do you look down on? Not the ones making all the money selling what you claim is junk (and it may be)...This truely shows the character of the posters I'm talking about. You look down on the ones that the well-heeled business owners are trying to make money from, while he has his employees working hours that they are unaccustomed to, in less than ideal circumstances. So this guy you don't bat an eye at, even admire, but the ones putting money in his wallet are scum? (Unless YOU were also shopping. But you are the exception, right?)
And these shoppers certainly didn't vote, unless it was for Obama so they could retain their welfare, right? Unless it was you shopping, of course.
It's like the people claiming to help the poor by buying a gift for an anonymous child and then scoffing at the child's family, or those who claim to help out the poor but not announcing that the bag of groceries was harvested from deceased Aunt Nellie's cobweb covered basement. Or bragging about doing your part all the while saying the bums don't deserve it.
So much hate for our fellow citizen, so little time:
PBR says: "You know that TV will look real nice set up in that mobile home....." Are you spying on them?
Macdaddy: "People abusing the unemployment system and many other systems to get stuff like this." I assume you pay the highest possible price for whatever you get, including the technology you sat in front of to write that? These shoppers might not be your neighbor trying to save a buck??
frogger: "Cannot lay one couch all day on ss on not have a tv." But then: "We went to Walmart with our family. It was fun." It was fun for your family, but they lay around on ss so needed a cheap tv? You were the ONLY worthy one there??
Miltonman: "...when we opened..." "I hope all you low life shoppers got what you really wanted." DO YOU MEAN YOU ENCOURAGED AND CATERED TO THE VERY LOWLIFES YOU DESPISE????"
and Nemesis: "I'd be curious to know how many of those in line were on some form of government assistance." According to some of you...all of them but yourselves!

If you dont mind buying garbage and getting 6 year old technology for $97.00 then black friday is perfect for you. Most of the door buster deals involve products that retailers buy for literally scrap prices which is why all these tvs are cheaply made Emerson, Dynex, Insignia etc. No top of the line products have any deals on Black Friday that are much better than any other sale during the year.

more power to them. If this is their thing I feel happy for them. The people in the back throwing their cookies at the people in the front should be ashamed though- or even arrested because these are the ones that get bad things started. The big TV for $288 is a great deal for someone with no job or low income. Some of these people have to save for months to get $400 they are saving so sitting outside overnight might be the only way they will ever get a big TV.

--->DTB - I would agree with your comment -
"Black Friday is NOT the best day to buy TVs" and I would add many other products to that comment.
The TV prices continue to go down. The newest in TV technology is starting to get old very soon after you get it home. Since more people have the TVs - the demand for them has gone down which causes the price to decrease. The manufacturers have to reduce the prices to continue to attract buyers to purchase the TVs. Plus - You will see more and many different brands now selling the same TVs that use to be priced so high. The competition is fun to watch. The increased competiton between the stores as they try to attract us with lower and lower prices gets us in the store to buy more things.

What a sad statement of the culture we live in!! Ill spend the day being thankful for being alive and my family. Not for things, not for a job, not for anything material. For my kids, for my wife, for my broothers, for my parents..and not to mention the health of all those whom aree the most important to me.
The day Id spend the day after thanksgiving fighting for TVs and video games is the day I die. I spent the day casting for Muskies in the morning and putting away the boat for the season. The day my kids "need" such materialistic things as a 50 inch TV is the day I look at myself and check what am I doing wrong. My 7 year old would MUCH rather go Muskie fishing , and Ice fishing with Dad than spend countless meaningless hours in front of the tube. How do I know I am a good parent? My child has athletic trophies/medals along with a 6 lb bass on his wall, not to mention he reads 3 grades ahead. THAT is what I am thankful for, not for standing in line for over priced TVs , even at 300 bucks.

Its a free country, and if people want to spend their precious time waiting in the cold to buy crap from china and mexico, that's their right - but nothing something I would do. People matter more than low prices. There's ALWAYS someone paying a high price for those (sometimes) low prices of Chinese/Thai items at "big box" stores.
