Milton finishes second at state
MADISON Shorewood and Milton have been two of the most dominating Division 2 high school girls swim programs in the state.
Milton was the defending two-time state team champions heading into Friday’s state meet, while Shorewood is the all-time leader in Division 2 state titles with six.
Make it seven for the Greyhounds.
Shorewood, thanks to a talented group of freestylers and a crucial win from Rachel Munson in the 100 breaststroke, won the team title with 255 points. Milton was second with 217.
Munson’s win in the second-to-last event clinched the team title, as Milton’s state-record time in winning the 400 relay still left the Red Hawks short of a third straight state title.
“I’m still very happy with second place,” Milton co-head coach Tom Lieder said. “Shorewood swam great tonight and has some outstanding seniors on the team.
“But we won four events and set two state records. That’s very impressive.”
Milton capped off another incredible season with a Division 2 state record in the 400 freestyle relay. Chelsea Calhoon, Abby Holmquist, Katelyn Holmquist and Bridgette Alexander dusted the field with a winning time of 3:29.26, shattering the old mark of 3:31.37 set by Shorewood in 1996.
Milton picked up its first points of the meet in the 200 freestyle as senior Abby Holmquist (1:54.98) finished third, and the junior Calhoon (1:55.58) was fourth. Abby Holmquist added another third-place finish in the 100 third in 52.62.
Although the Red Hawks came up short in their bid for a “three-peat,” Alexander was able to win her third straight individual title. The junior made it three in a row in the 200 individual medley, touching the wall in 2:04.54.
“I was hoping to maybe break the state record (2:03.89), but anytime you have the fastest time, you have to be happy,” Alexander said of her 200 IM victory. “I felt like I swam my best.”
Katelyn Holmquist, the defending 100 backstroke champion, finished second in the event Friday behind Alexander and added a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle.
Milton’s 200 freestyle relay team of Katelyn Holmquist, Alexander, Calhoon and Abby Holmquist made it two straight state titles by cruising to victory with a time of 1:36.69.
Alexander pulled away early in beating defending champion Katelyn Holmquist in the 100 backstroke. Alexander’s winning time of 55.45 broke the state record of 55.83, set by Siri Smites of Berlin in 2008. Holmquist was second in 56.93 and Calhoon was fourth in 58.49. Elkhorn’s Kady Ruemmele was fifth in the 100 backstroke.
Fort Atkinson’s Emma Bare finished third in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 50 freestyle. The Blackhawks finished fourth overall with 133.5 points.
