Obama heads back to divided government

One day after his surprisingly comfortable re-election, a triumphant President Barack Obama headed back to the White House and divided government on Wednesday with little time left for a compromise with Republicans to avert spending cuts and tax increases that threaten a new recession.

The president also is looking ahead to top-level personnel changes in a second term, involving three powerful Cabinet portfolios at a minimum.

Republicans headed into a season of potentially painful reflection after retaining control of the House but losing the presidency and falling deeper into the Senate minority. One major topic: the changing face of America.

“We’ve got to deal with the issue of immigration through good policy. What is the right policy if we want economic growth in America as it relates to immigration?” said former Republican Party Chairman Haley Barbour. Obama drew support from about 70 percent of all Hispanics, far outpacing Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

There was little time to celebrate for the winners, with a postelection session of Congress scheduled to convene next Tuesday. By common agreement, the main order of business is the search for a compromise to keep the economy from falling off a so-called “fiscal cliff.”

The White House said Obama had made postelection phone calls to congressional leaders and reiterated a commitment to bipartisan steps to “reduce our deficit in a balanced way, cut taxes for middle class families and small businesses and create jobs.”

“The president said he believed that the American people sent a message in yesterday’s election that leaders in both parties need to put aside their partisan interests and work with common purpose to put the interests of the American people and the American economy first,” the statement said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters that any solution should include higher taxes on “the richest of the rich.” That was in keeping with Obama’s election platform, which calls for the expiration of tax cuts on income over $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples.

Reid said he spoke with Republican House Speaker John Boehner as well as Obama Tuesday night as the election results became known, and he declared that “of course” a compromise was possible on the overall issue.

“I’m not going to draw a line in the sand. He’s not going to draw a line in the sand, I don’t believe,” Reid said of Boehner.

The speaker set a conference call with his Republican rank and file for mid-afternoon.

He said in pre-election interviews he would not agree to raise taxes on small business owners, a formulation Republicans often use in opposing the president’s position on the issue.

Barring legislation by year’s end, taxes are on course to rise by more than $500 billion in 2013, and spending is to be cut by an additional $130 billion or so, totals that would increase over a decade. The blend is designed to rein in the federal debt, but officials in both parties warn it poses a grave threat to an economic recovery that has been halting at best.

Obama and congressional leaders in both parties say they want an alternative, but serious compromise talks were non-existent during the fierce campaign season.

That ended Tuesday in an election in which more than 119 million votes were cast, mostly without controversy despite dire predictions of politically charged recounts and lawsuits while the presidency hung in the balance.

Obama won the popular vote narrowly, the electoral vote comfortably, and the battleground states where the campaign was principally waged in a landslide.

The president carried seven of the nine states where he, Romney and their allies spent nearly $1 billion on television commercials, winning Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Colorado and Virginia.

The Republican challenger won North Carolina, and Florida remained too close to call

Obama also turned back late moves by Republicans in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota.

Hispanics account for a larger share of the population than the national average in Nevada and Colorado, two of the closely contested battleground states. The president’s outsized majority among Hispanics — in the range of 70 percent according to Election Day interviews with voters — helped him against a challenger who called earlier in the year for self-deportation of illegal immigrants.

Other factors in crucial states:

— In Ohio, roughly 60 percent of all voters said they favored the Obama administration’s auto bailout, and the president captured nearly three quarters of their votes, according to the survey, conducted for The Associated Press and a group of television networks. He stressed the rescue operation throughout the campaign. Romney opposed it, and in late campaign commercials suggested it had contributed to the loss of U.S. jobs overseas.

— In Virginia, the black vote was roughly half again as big in percentage terms as nationally, also an aid to Obama.

Changes are in store for the victorious administration. The election past, three members of Obama’s Cabinet have announced plans to leave their posts: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Other changes would not be unusual in the second administration of any president.

As for Congress, Democrats improbably gained seats in re-establishing their Senate majority. Their final margin hinged on a decision by independent Sen.-elect Angus King of Vermont, who has not yet said which party he will affiliate with.

The election was the second in a row in which Republicans lost potentially winnable races after nominating candidates who articulated views that voters evidently judged as too extreme. Two years ago, tea party-backed insurgents were defeated in Nevada, Colorado and Delaware. This year, senior Republicans watched in disbelief as Rep. Todd Akin in Missouri and Richard Mourdock in Indiana flamed out after making incendiary comments about rape.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said his party has “a period of reflection and recalibration ahead.” In a statement issued before the extent of GOP losses was known, he added, “While some will want to blame one wing of the party over the other, the reality is candidates from all corners of our GOP lost tonight.”

There were 13 House races that remained too close to call, leaving the final size of the Republicans’ majority in doubt. They won at least 232 seats and led for two more, a trend that would translate to a net loss of 8 from the current lineup.

In defeat, Democrats pointed to races where they turned tea party-backed conservatives out of power as evidence they had stemmed a tide.

Associated Press writers Julie Pace in Chicago and Donna Cassata, Larry Margasak and Andrew Taylor in Washington contributed to this story.

Governor praises pension reform bill by T. Herdt, Aug. 31, 2012
Sacramento - On overwhelming bipartisan votes, lawmakers on Friday sent to Gov. Jerry Brown a comprehensive reform of public pensions in California that is designed to end abuses such as spiking, prevent high-wage earners from accumulating $100,000 pensions and save state and local governments about $50 billion over the next 30 years. "Pensions were not made to be a way to make people wealthy, but to ensure security at retirement age," said Sen. Gloria Negrette McLeod, D-Chino. The bill, AB 340, caps the amount of compensation subject to pension calculations at $110,000, increases retirement ages, and lowers pension formulas for state and local government workers hired after Jan. 1. It also requires all public workers, new and current, to pay at least half the annual contributions that are made into their pension funds. It also seeks to end so-called pension "spiking" by requiring that pensions be calculated on the average compensation earned during an employee's final three years and prohibiting the use of cashed-in vacation time, bonuses and other non-recurring pay in calculating pension benefits.
The bill, which Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to sign, also bars the practice known as "double-dipping," by requiring that retired government employees stay off the payroll for at least six months before being allowed to come back as part-time workers. Brown praised the Legislature's action, calling the bill "the biggest rollback of public pensions in California history. This sweeping pension reform package will save tens of billions of taxpayer dollars and make the system more sustainable for the long term." An analysis by the California Public Employees Retirement System estimates the changes will save state and local governments from $42 billion to $55 billion over the next three decades. Most of the savings would come when those hired beginning next year start to retire, but more immediate savings will be realized as local governments negotiate higher employee contributions to their pensions. The bill says the contributions must be split 50-50 between employers and employees by 2015. If that level isn't reached through collective bargaining by then, the bill would give local governments the ability to achieve that level by declaring a bargaining impasse. Nearly all state government workers already pay half.

Wislady, you still can come out and save face and admit that you had a legitimate belief that this story was true. You got it from another blog or post or email, and you took the bait and believed it was real. Then it turns out its on a satire and you make claims that the purpose of the article is to raise a bigger issue...than post it in that kind of context. SO you either thought it was a real story and you were fooled or you knew it was satire and posted it anyways hoping taht a few people would read it and be out raged.

I think you need to look up the definition of satire. I'm not here to attack you, I just want you to admit you read that site and though the information was real. you didn't know it was satire. You saw it on another site and posted it here because you were outraged, without looking into the facts at all. You were duped. Instead of trying to come back and attack me, I am just pointing out that you posted a fake news story with the belief that it was real. When the David Koch call came in I was very skeptical that it was really walker on the phone. I did research and found proof taht it was walker in the recording.

poobah:
2010 saw a big GOP sweep in congress. The electorate did not just magically change in 2 years. The GOP simply elected a HORRIBLE candidate for president. I pointed that out all during the GOP primaries. Keep in mind all Romney had to beat was a pizza delivery guy, the wicked witch of the west (or was it east?), the taxes 6 gun shooting cowboy, and a few other clowns. The two sensible ones (Huntsman and Paul) were immediately cast aside by the party, and all it served to do was alienate many Republican voters. This was about as bad of candidate since well, Mccain, haha. The same stuff was said about the dems after 2004 when John Kerry lost to a very weak Bush (how the party had to drastically change, ext), and I said the same thing then. They were not done, they just elected a horrible candidate in the primaries. In 2006 the dems just took the congress in a total landslide.
.
In any event, I won't wager any political stuff until that all heats up in a couple years. One can always make HUGE scores on politics, as the stuff is so over hyped, and people don't know how to interpret data (Like...errrr, faux news). Precious metals are indeed a GREAT place to be right now. The fiscal cliff thing will almost certainly end with some bogus compromise, where both sides make minor concessions on taxes, and spending cuts, and they of course then increase the debt ceiling again...Fed will buy that debt (more monetary creationism), and gold and commodities will take off as the $$ gets devalued further. Metals are a great long term play with the in the a state of monetary creationism, which is a course that is pretty much set into stone now.

I disagree with you comments about the Republican party. I am no ideologue for the GOP (voted Gary Johnson), but can say with almost 100% certainty that the Republicans will take a HUGE majority in the house, and win back the senate in 2014. These things are very cyclical to begin with. Historically the Presidents party almost always looses congressional seats in mass the next election. However; this will be WAY more exemplified with the awful economy we will head into. This whole economy is nothing more then a fed created monetary illusion. The economy has done NOTHING the last decade if not for the TRILLIONS of fed stimulus. Unless this fiscal cliff crisis ends with kicking the can down the road a few more years, and allows the fed to create a few trillion more $$'s of bogus liquidity, the economy is heading south BIG TIME. I would make the very safe prediction of calling a big GOP take over of congress in 2014. Obama winning really isn't as great as the dems may think. If this thing truly melts down in the next 4 years(and it very well may) he will attain FULL blame, even though it was the combination of many Presidents prior to him. Of course as all the blame will fall on him, people will idiotically elect Republicans who's solution is just as much of a disaster. The game will continue forever until people truly figure out that both parties have lied, mislead, and looked out only for them-self, and corporate interests.

If it takes satire to draw attention to a real problem, so be it. No matter what is written, if it isn't something you agree with, you label it a lie anyway. The writer is cleverly addressing people like you. Why do you suppose the Onion is so successful, or Bill Maher, or Leno, or Letterman? It is because the left can not deal with reality, and everything is a joke (even Benghazi).

Why don't you do some research and see how many of the states did NOT meet the deadlines. Wisconsin is notorious for missing the deadline, even after the lawsuit of 2010, they had another lawsuit filed this year by the Romney campaign.

New Orleans isn't counting the military absentee ballots until Tuesday. Not many military votes there, but a large project on referendum is holding only a 9 vote difference. In this case, the military votes really will make a difference.

What happened in Ohio?

Michigan also had a lawsuit, and numerous other states fail to follow the Federal Law.

To most of the left, the military ballots are of no concern. This is the party who thinks they can rewrite history and turn A. Lincoln into a "Progressive".

The democratic party should change their name to the Statist Party.

"Karl Rove told Fox News' Megyn Kelly on Thursday that President Obama won re-election "by suppressing the vote" with negative campaign ads that "turned off" potential voters, citing a victory that carried a smaller percentage of the popular vote compared to that of the 2008 presidential race." [ http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/en... ]

Poor old Karl. He has to blame someone besides himself. He was, after all, the architect of the style of campaign that both Obama and Romney ran. Karl sure has a lot of explaining to do to his billionaire buddies [ http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/en... ] about how he wasted $400 million of their money.

The Republican party is now fractured -- those who represent the more reasonable pre-Reagan Republican party of old and those who applauded as the party was overtaken by social, so called Christian, conservatives during the Bush years. The Republican party of angry old white persons who fear becoming the minority really had its best, and probably last, chance to win the presidency this year. The phenomena of states that were once solid Republican states and are now swing states will continue to spread. With changing demographics that the Republican party either denies or refuses to embrace, the day is soon approaching, within a few presidential election cycles, that states like Arizona and Texas will be swing states and shortly afterwards dominated by Democrats.

The Democrats now face a political cliff.
If 4 years from now the economy is the same as now or only a little better the Republicans could run Howdy Doody (or Newt Gangrich, same difference) and win.
The Democrats challenge is for the moderates in the party to prevail over the far left that now controls the party. If the moderates cannot pull President Obama toward the center their will be no improvement to the economy and the Democrats will be out in the wilderness in 2016.
Reaching across the aisle will have to mean real compromise, not the present version of my way or the highway.

New EPA regulations would put an outright ban on any new businesses across huge chunks of the United States. Others would shut down the coal industry, once and for all, throwing tens of thousands of workers into long-term unemployment.

These regulations will begin rolling out this month. That’s another reason why smart businesses are stashing their cash. They have no idea what the regulations will mean to them.

Of course Obama had to wait until AFTER the election to hurt more businesses.
