Rattler women, men drop openers

The UW-Rock County men's and women's basketball teams got a rough baptism for the 2012-13 season Thursday night.

The teams played at Division II Illinois Valley Community College and came home with losses.

The Rattler women lost,

74-65, while the Rock County men fell, 82-50.

"There's no moral victories, but I was pleased the way we played with them," Rock County coach Scott Lee said of his teams. "The community colleges down here give out scholarships, but we played well."

Janesville Parker graduates Julia Dement and Kayce Chesebro scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, in their Rattler debut. Beloit Memorial grad Courtney Draeving added 15 points, all on three-point goals.

"We have one returning player in Kiki Smith, so every other player is right out of high school," Lee said.

The women's roster features 12 players, which is about twice as many as Lee has had available the past two seasons.

The UW-Rock County men's team could not stay with IVCC, which featured a 6-foot-9 center.

Janesville Parker graduate David Harper had 14 points, and Elkhorn High graduate Kyle Hoskins added 10.

The Rattlers have three returning players out of the 13 on the roster.

UW-Rock County opens the Wisconsin Collegiate College season Saturday against defending champion UW-Waukesha at home. The women's game starts at noon, with the men's game at 2 p.m.
