Sun Prairie's Butler throws no hitter against Janesville Parker
Tony Butler has not pitched much this season for Sun Prairie.
The junior is too talented and too valuable at shortstop for the state’s top-ranked baseball team.
Making a rare appearance on the mound Thursday, Butler made the most of the opportunity by no-hitting Janesville Parker. The Cardinals broke open a scoreless game in the fifth with six runs en route to a 6-0 Big Eight Conference victory.
Parker (4-17, 4-12) had two baserunners off Butler—both on walks—but nothing else.
“Butler had pretty good stuff, and when he needed to make a play, he made two unbelievable plays to keep the no-hitter going,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “He made a play on Mike Heyerdahl’s bunt down the third base line that could probably show up on ESPN’s Top 10 plays.
“They were just better than us tonight, but we played right with them until the fifth. It was just an unfortunate inning where things got away from us, and as usual, our trouble started with two walks.”
Adam Greene suffered the loss despite another solid outing. The junior held the high-potent Cardinal offense off the board until the fifth. Brady Brandt threw a scoreless sixth for Parker.
The Vikings play second-ranked Holmen in a nonconference game today as part of the Marshfield Tournament.
“I don’t think there’s a team in the state that’s played a tougher schedule this year than we have,” Martin said. “We proved we can play with the No. 1 team, now we get a chance to see how we do against No. 2.”
