— The American Red Cross is offering the chance to win prizes to encourage people to donate blood this summer.

The need for blood during the summer remains constant even though blood donations typically decline.

The Live Life Give Life initiative kicks off Monday and continues through Sept. 5, when donors earn a chance to win a prize certificate for $5,000 redeemable at GiftCertificates.com.

Hundreds of prize choices are available, including vacation getaways, shopping sprees or meals out for one year.

In the days surrounding Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, five donors in the Badger-Hawkeye Region of the American Red Cross will be eligible to win a $200 GiftCertificates.com prize package.

Winning donors may choose from restaurants, department stores, books, music, electronic and more. Those younger than 18 must have written permission of a parent or legal guardian to accept a prize.

To donate blood, call 1-800-733-2767 or go online to redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment or obtain more information. All blood types are needed.

A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 and younger must meet height and weight requirements.
