— Janesville Parker baseball coach Brian Martin was happy with the way his team swung the bats Tuesday against Verona.

The Vikings piled up 15 hits—matching Parker’s number of hits in its previous four games combined—to defeat the Wildcats, 9-7, in a Big Eight Conference matchup at Riverside Park.

“We needed one in the worst way,” Martin said of the victory, which moved Parker to 4-11 in the Big Eight and 4-16 overall. “The biggest thing was the 15 hits.”

Parker jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead, but Verona (5-10 Big Eight, 8-12 overall) came back with three runs in the second.

The Vikings added three in the fourth to go ahead, 7-4, then added single runs in the fifth and the sixth.

Martin said the run in the sixth was important because it gave the Vikings a four-run lead.

Aric Bobzien led off the sixth with a double, moved to third on Vernon Franklin’s groundout to first, and scored on Hunter Marshall’s squeeze bunt.

Jake Welch had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs for Parker, and Brady Brandt went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Cullen Osmond pitched 6 1/3 innings to earn the victory.

Parker plays Thursday at Sun Prairie.
