Janesville Craig’s baseball team has fallen on hard times.

The Cougars, who were in the thick of the Big Eight Conference race 10 days ago, lost for the third time in the last four conference games Tuesday.

Madison Memorial rallied from a three-run deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to a 5-4 Big Eight win.

Craig (14-6, 11-4) tied the game in the sixth on Nick Blomgren’s home run, but Memorial (9-12, 7-8) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning.

“We had a couple of defensive miscues and that was the difference,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “We have to play better defensively if we’re going to be a good tournament team.

“And we only had three hits today, and two of them were home runs. We also have to start swinging the bats better and put more balls in play. Our approach at the plate isn’t the best right now.”

Craig, which struck out 13 times Tuesday, took a 3-0 lead in the fourth—highlighted by Dylan Hoskins’ second home run of the season.

Colin Frey suffered the loss despite a decent outing. The junior was hurt by two Cougar errors.

Craig hosts Middleton on Thursday at Riverside Park.
