UW-Whitewater hosting baseball regional

— The UW-Whitewater baseball team isnít just going to host the dance, itís received an invitation to attend.

The Warhawks received the fourth seed in the Whitewater Regional of the NCAA Division III tournament. The Warhawks (29-15) face Concordia University-Chicago (33-12) in the first game at


10 a.m. Wednesday.


Whitewater is one of four regional sites that host eight teams. The other four regionals are comprised of six teams, for a total national field of 56 teams.


The winners of the eight regionals travel to Fox Cities Stadium in Little Chute for the NCAA Division III World Series on May 25-29.


Whitewater is making its fifth consecutive, and 15th overall, NCAA tournament appearance.


The Warhawks advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series in 1989 (tied for fifth), 2004 (fourth), 2005 (national champions), 2008 (third), and 2011 (tied for fifth).


Whitewater finished second in the WIAC regular season, and second in the leagueís postseason tournament.


Saint Thomas won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and finished second to Saint Johnís, playing in another regional, in their league tourney. UW-La Crosse won the WIAC regular season and tournament championships, and North Park College received the automatic berth from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.


Concordia finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Northern Athletic Conference regular season, and then finished second in the leagueís tournament to earn an at-large berth. Saint Scholastica earned the automatic berth for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Aurora the Northern Athletic Conference, and Saint Norbert the Midwest Conference.
