Craig, Parker lose softball games
Miranda Morrison put a damper Thursday on Janesville Craig's hopes of a Big Eight Conference softball title.
The Madison East junior pitcher struck out 13 batters and allowed only three hits to lead the Purgolders to a 3-1 win over the Cougars.
Craig fell to 13-4 overall, including 10-4 in the Big Eight. The loss leaves the Cougars two games behind front-running Sun Prairie with four games left.
East (9-9, 7-7) got three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to three Craig errors.
"Our defense was unacceptable for this point of the season," Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. "And that's really surprising because it has been solid all season.
"But give Morrison credit. She threw the ball well for them. And I think getting those three runs in the first inning gave her a lot of confidence."
Craig got its only run in the seventh on a double by Sydney Cramer, and Leigh Grall's RBI single.
Paige Weber took the defeat despite allowing only four hits and striking out six. Neither pitcher walked a batter.

-- La Follette 9, Parker 0—Nicole Newman took care of Janesville Parker both on the mound and at the plate.
The 6-foot-2 sophomore limited the Vikings to one hit while striking out 13. In addition, she hit two home runs in the eight-run sixth inning that put the Lancers comfortably in front.
After watching her team strike out 13 times swinging away against Newman in the teams' first meeting, Parker coach Jenni Seisser decided to go a different direction Thursday.
"I wanted to play small ball right away," Seisser said. "But we couldn't get bunts down against her.
"We weren't touching her," Seisser said of Newman. "She is a solid player."
The Vikings play at Madison Memorial on Tuesday and are at home Thursday against Middleton.
