— The Janesville School Board committed to a major maintenance project at its meeting Tuesday.

The board accepted a bid of $395,559 to replace the deteriorating roof on the older section of Jackson Elementary School.

Seven companies bid on the project, which was originally estimated at $485,000. The board accepted the low bid from McDermott Roofing of Rockford, Ill.

The project is scheduled to begin after summer school ends July 6 and last 30 days, district Chief Financial Officer Keith Pennington told the board. The project should be complete before teachers return.

The project was cut from the current year's budget but it rose to the top of the district's list of maintenance needs for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Still undecided is whether to go ahead with a planned replacement of the inefficient but still operating boiler at Franklin Middle School, which is estimated to cost $1 million, among other projects.

The board also reviewed a proposed maintenance projects plan, which calls for about $11.8 million in projects over five years. The board will consider funding for each project and could push some of them farther into the future.

Most of the major project proposals involve replacing roofs and windows and repairing parking lots.
