— That collective “whew” that floated over Janesville early Tuesday evening came from the Janesville Parker dugout at Riverside Park.

The Vikings defeated visiting Madison East, 5-2, in a Big Eight Conference baseball game.

The victory snapped a losing streak for the Vikings, who improved to 3-10 in the Big Eight and 2-14 overall.

“It’s been a while,” said Parker coach Brian Martin. “We’ve had several close losses so this feels good.”

Junior Adam Greene pitched a complete game to earn the victory. He allowed six hits and walked three, while striking out four. Only one of the Purgolder runs was earned.

“He pitched well,” Martin said. “Our guys have been pitching well, but the way we’ve been hitting, there hasn’t been much margin for error. Adam delivered for us.

“There weren’t many times that we were in trouble,” Martin said. “He got ahead of hitters, and we played good defense behind him.”

The Purgolders (5-6, 8-7) scored twice in the second inning to take the lead, but Parker responded with one in the third inning on Tyler Brooks’ double and took control with a four-run fifth.

The Vikings loaded the bases and scored on an error, two wild pitches and Jake Welch’s groundout.

The Vikings play at Madison West on Thursday.
