River Falls sweeps UW-Whitewater to earn league title

— UW-Whitewater lost twice Sunday to UW-River Falls, 4-1 and 8-4, for the WIAC softball tournament championship.

River Falls (30-13) earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament May 18-22 in Salem, Va. Whitewater (32-11) must gain an at-large bid to the NCAA field, which is to be announced today.


Amanda Ryder socked a solo home run off Whitewater starter Katie Boyle to give River Falls a 1-0 lead in the third inning. River Falls added three runs on four hits in the fifth inning to put the first game out of reach.


In Game 2, pinch hitter Jamie Klein hit a grand slam in the fourth inning off the Warhawks’ Bekka Houda to give River Falls a 6-2 lead.
