— The Janesville Parker High baseball team suffered another loss after being in the game in the final innings Thursday.

This time, however, the Vikings didn’t have to look far for someone to blame after Middleton scored five times in the sixth inning for a 9-4 win.

“It’s kind of disappointing,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “For the first time all year, we beat ourselves.”

A two-run sixth put Parker within 4-3, but even that had Martin wondering, “what if?”

A hit batter, a Cardinal error and a walk loaded the bases with no out. Brady Brandt then drew a walk to score Vernon Franklin, and Aric Bobzien singled home Hunter Marshall.

With the bases loaded and still no outs, the Vikings were in position to at least tie the game.

But a 6-2-3 double play and a popup ended the inning without any more runs being scored. The Cardinals executed three double plays in the game.

Middleton responded in the bottom of the inning with its decisive five runs.

Two misplayed bunts fueled the big inning.

“All night long, we gave guys extra bases by missing cutoff men or throwing to the wrong base,” Martin said. “We had trouble fielding bunts.

“Once again, we were right there, but we left nine guys on. We beat ourselves.”

The Vikings, 2-9 in the Big Eight and 2-11 overall, play two games Saturday. They open with a Big Eight game against Beloit Memorial at 11 a.m. at Riverside Park, followed by Kenosha Tremper in a nonconference game.
