After downsizing about a year ago, space became available for lease in the building housing the U.S. Post Office in Janesville.

The U.S. Post Office in Janesville is not getting a new address.

Some have wondered because of a sign in front of the building on Milton Avenue that advertises space for lease.

"When the post office downsized about a year ago, it made space available in the building," said Mandy Witt, who is advertising the space as a broker for Coldwell Banker Commercial McGuire Mears & Associates.

The entire building, which is owned by a Chicago developer, is about 36,000 square feet.

In an effort to save money, postal officials determined they could get by with about half that space in Janesville. While the office's retail area is still the same size, it was moved and the number of post office boxes was cut from 2,300 to 1,700.

That left 18,000 square feet available for rent just to the right of the post office's front door.

Witt said the space has been available since last year. The sign is not new. She had serious interest in the space last year, but the deal fell apart.

Because of its size, the space would be suitable for a dollar store, grocery, pharmacy or an athletic club, she said. The rectangular shape and lack of multiple entrances makes it available to only one tenant.

...dollar store, title loans, Mexican grocery/restaurant, mattress store, consignment store, Walgreen's... Apparently, you can never have enough of any of these.
