Three candidates vying for Albany School Board spots
Adam R. Kopp will challenge incumbents Edward J. Maksym Jr. and Andy J. Knauf.
Andy J. Knauf (I)
Address: W1169 Jericho Drive, Albany.
Job: Director of Information Technology at Mead & Hunt, Madison.
Education: Earned a mechanical design degree in 1990 from Northcentral Technical College, Wausau.
Community service: Coach for Albany minor league baseball, vice president and program director for Monroe Youth Hockey Association.
Previous elected positions held: Albany School Board since 2011.
Major campaign issues: Open enrollment and keeping up with technology while allocating funds appropriately within current budget constraints.
"Albany is a very good school district with a lot to offer its students. I know of some families who have open enrolled but have not even visited the school. Albany is a small school with small class sizes and a tremendous staff. Our teachers and paraprofessionals ensure each child can succeed to the best of his/her abilities."
"I have a firm understanding of providing quality education within tight budgets. One of my goals is to ensure the Albany School District has some of the latest technologies for our students. I have made several changes with respect to information technology to make the school district more efficient and less expensive. Getting updated technology in our school is a top priority for me."
Address: W1946 Purintun Road, Albany.
Job: Project leader managing road construction projects for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation
Education: High school diploma and associate degree in civil engineering.
Community service: Albany Lions Club
Previous elected positions held: None
Major campaign issues: Budget in these tight economics times.
"Being a state employee, I have had to learn to do more with less and am hoping to carry my strong common-sense approach to a position on the Albany School Board. I hope to have a positive influence on the education and learning environment of our youth."
Ed Maksym Jr. (I)
Address: N5876 Sugar River Parkway, Albany.
Education: Bachelor's degree in business administration, Loyola University, Chicago.
Community service: Working with the Albany school and local church groups to develop a community food garden to raise fresh produce for the Albany Food Pantry and to develop a youth nutrition program.
Elected posts: Albany School Board since 2009
Major campaign issues: Maintaining and improving student learning in a financially difficult time, creating opportunities for 21st century learning where students are provided alternative learning tracks to prepare them for their life choices, using resources effectively to provide students in the district the best education possible, maximizing school district resources by sharing resources with surrounding school districts, keeping rural schools strong and viable into the future.
"Our school district has several programs and projects addressing the above issues. These programs and projects are in various stages of development and implementation. Individual board members need to work together as a team, with administration, staff and families in the district to research the issues and develop relevant solutions that are practical and financially responsible. Having served as a board member for three years and participating in the development of our existing and planned programs makes me a qualified candidate for the Albany School Board."
