Illinois I-90/39 project set to begin Monday
Weather permitting, construction will start Monday to widen a stretch of Interstate 90/39 from the Wisconsin state line to Rockton Road in Illinois.
The $33.8 million project will widen the interstate to six lanes, replace a bridge and rebuild ramps.
The I-90/39 westbound lanes will be removed and replaced this year, with the eastbound lanes reconstructed in 2013.
Work will begin with temporary lanes being added on the eastbound side so that all traffic can be switched while the westbound pavement is removed and replaced.
Two lanes will be kept open in each direction during the day to avoid high traffic volumes and minimize congestion. The contractors will work during the night to widen the eastbound lanes by replacing the shoulders with additional temporary traffic lanes.
The widening is scheduled for completion by July. All four lanes will then be shifted to the eastbound lanes, and the removal of the westbound lanes will begin.
