Kevin Punzel was nearly perfect Thursday night.

The longtime Janesville bowler put together the best three-game series in city history.

Punzel had games of 299, 300 and 289 for an 888 series in the Wiggy’s Saloon Thursday night men’s league at RiversEdge Bowl. Punzel’s 888 series broke the previous city record of 866 set by Jamie Jones, also at RiversEdge.

In using a new ball for only the second time, Punzel had strikes in 33 of 35 frames. He left the 10 pin on his last shot in game one, and another 10 pin in the 10th in game three. The 300 was Punzel’s 31st of his career.

“I’ve been bowling pretty good all season, but tonight everything came together,” said Punzel, who carries a 238 season average. “I won a tournament in Madison three weeks ago, and had a 783 series last Tuesday.”

Punzel will bowl in the state tournament the last weekend of March and at the national tournament in Baton Rouge, La., in May.
