Ashley Hartwig is one of the top three-sport athletes in the Big Eight Conference, but basketball continues to be her strong suit.

The Janesville Parker junior forward was named to the All-Big Eight Conference first team in basketball on Monday, and with a strong nucleus returning for the Vikings next season, Hartwig should continue to build on her success.

Hartwig is joined on the first team by Verona senior Ashley Bartow, Madison East and University of Wisconsin recruit Makailah Dyer, Sun Prairie junior McKayla Yentz and Middleton senior Mika Passina. Bartow, a Drake University recruit, is the Player of the Year.

In averaging 12.3 points per game, Hartwig led the Vikings to a 15-8 season and a third-place finish in the Big Eight. The 5-foot-10 Hartwig had a season-high 32 in a win over East and 24 in a win over Milwaukee King. Parker beat King and Middleton this season, two of the four teams in the Division 1 state tournament.

“Ashley has a great work ethic,” Parker coach Tom Klawitter said. “And her teammates helped her get the first-team recognition by getting her the ball.

“Hopefully, this recognition will inspire her to work even harder to get even better.”

Janesville Craig junior point guard Kristi Crandall was named to the second team, while Parker senior Julia Dement was on the third team.

Parker junior Dani Fugate was honorable mention.
