Brodhead, Clinton to play in girls regional final

Three players each scored 16 points as Brodhead gradually pulled away from visiting Jefferson on Friday night to earn a spot in tonight’s WIAA Division 3 girls basketball regional final game.


The Cardinals (20-3) defeated the Eagles, 60-49, and will host Clinton in a regional final game tonight.


Sophomore Rachel Heller and junior Amanda Pickel and Taylor Douglas each had 16 points for Brodhead. The Cardinals made 26 of 32 free throws, led by Douglas’ 10-of-10 and Heller’s 8-for-8 performances.


Pickel had three three-point goals.


Senior Maggie Hutchinson and sophomore Katie Heine each had 12 points for the Eagles, who finished 10-14.

n Clinton 57, Edgerton 39—Clinton pulled away in the second half at Edgerton to advance to tonight’s regional final at Rock Valley South rival Brodhead. The Cardinals defeated the Cougars twice this season.


The Cougars (17-7) led by just two points, 26-24, just before halftime but scored the final basket of the half. Clinton’s Raechel Jacobson then made her only two baskets of the game to start the second half and put the Cougars in control.


Clinton outscored the Crimson Tide, 19-8, in the third quarter to open a 47-32 lead.


Mallory Niemann, Clinton’s 5-foot-10 sophomore center, and sophomore guard Megan Lantz led the team with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Lantz and Niemann each had 14 points in first half. Niemann became Clinton’s all-time single-season leader in rebounds with after pushing her total to 268 with 17 on Friday. Maggie Schultz held the previous record of 264 set in 2009.


Junior guard Brooke Ferrell led Edgerton with 17 points, including three three-point baskets.

? n East Troy 60, Evansville 36—East Troy built a 16-5 lead in the first quarter and breezed to its regional semifinal victory.


The Trojans (21-2) host Lake Mills tonight for a sectional berth.


Four East Troy players scored in double figures, led by Breanna Gaspervich’s 17 points.


Andrea Olsen and Rachel Atchinson each scored 12 points, and Alicia Olson had 10 points.


Makenzie Abey led the visiting Blue Devils (7-17) with nine points.

Emma Koeppel of Lake Mills led all scorers with 15.
