Brendan Ortiz got right into his tournament mode Thursday night.

The Madison Memorial junior, who was the hero of the Spartans’ state championship game victory last year, scored 29 points as Memorial defeated Sun Prairie, 68-53, in a Division 1 sectional semifinal at Madison La Follette.

Ortiz, who hit several critical shots in an 80-78 triple-overtime victory over De Pere in last season’s state title game, banked in a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to create a 25-all tie.

That stopped a Cardinal rally, during which Sun Prairie overcame a 16-5 deficit after one quarter to take a 25-22 lead. The Spartans took over in the second half.

Junior Lomomba added 14 points for the Spartans. Memorial (23-1) plays Mukwonago (19-6) in Saturday’s sectional final.

Junior Nick Fuller led Sun Prairie (18-7) with 20 points. Nick Noskowiak added 13.
