Demos leaps at shot for national title

— Janesville’s Shelby Demos leads the list of three area high school graduates at UW-Whitwater who earned berths in the NCAA Division III national indoor track and field meet.

The two-day meet begins Friday at Grinnell (Iowa) College.

Demos, a junior out of Janesville Parker, will compete in the high jump. She has the top qualifying height of 5-feet-10 ¾ inches.

Demos has already earned All-America indoor honors twice in her collegiate career. She was second in the high jump at the 2011 indoor meet, and was sixth at the indoor meet as a freshman. Demos’ qualifying mark (5-10.75) is the UW-W indoor record.

Whitewater High graduate Luke Buchholz has qualified in the men’s high jump. Buchholz finished eighth in the high jump in the 2009 national indoor meet, and was fourth in 2010.

Jonas Elusme of Wartburg College heads the list of qualifiers at 6-11, with Buchholz in the field at 6-9.

Ken Hoffman, also a Whitewater High School graduate, set the Division III record of 7-3.25 in 1993.

East Troy High graduate Cory Zaeske competes in the long jump. His qualifying distance of 23-6¾ ranks 10th.

Wenley Louis of Geneseo State has the top mark in the field at 25-6. Shawn Watson of Mount Union set the Division III record of 25-3.25 in 1999, and Bill Euler set Whitewater’s record of 24-10 in 1991.

UW-Whitewater’s JoLyn Owen (pentathlon) and Lexie Sondgeroth (long jump) also qualified for the national meet.

Other Warhawk men’s qualifiers include Nick Bee (60), Marcus Smith (triple jump), Peter Schroeder, Tim Prelletz, Zak Fritz and Jared Denu (1,600 relay), Dave Kuczynski (long jump) and Mike Judd (60 hurdles).
