— A homeless Delavan man, formerly from Kentucky, is scheduled for a March 22 court appearance in McHenry County Court in Woodstock, Ill., on three counts of sexual assault of a 16-year-old Harvard, Ill., girl.

Mark A. Underwood, 47, also is charged with two additional felonies—traveling to meet a minor and using the Internet to seduce a minor to have sex.

The criminal complaint charges Underwood with traveling from Kentucky to Illinois for the purpose of engaging in sex with a minor.

The complaint, filed Monday in McHenry County, claims Underwood committed the crimes in September, October and November 2010. He was arrested Monday by Walworth County sheriff's deputies and taken to the Walworth County Jail where he was being held Tuesday on a $50,000 cash bond awaiting extradition to Illinois.

One of the felonies charged in the complaint is "grooming," described in the complaint as using an Internet service "to seduce and lure a minor to engage in the sexual offense of aggravated criminal sexual abuse."

The Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake, Ill., reported that police said Underwood moved to Harvard from Kentucky to have a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl. The arrest of Underwood was the result of a nine-month investigation, police said.

Police said Underwood did not have a significant criminal history and the case involves only one minor, but the investigation is continuing, the Herald reported.
