— UW-Whitewater rolled to an 83-68 victory over Northwestern (Minn.) in an NCAA Division III men’s basketball first-round tournament game at the Katchel Gym.

Whitewater (24-4) plays defending NCAA Division III champion University of St. Thomas (22-6) at 7 tonight.

Chris Davis scored 35 points for Whitewater, making 15 of 18 shots from the field, including four of six three-point basket attempts. Eric Bryson of Elkhorn added 20 points and Cody Odegaard and Alex Edmonds chipped in 10 points apiece for the Warhawks.

Davis had 21 points in the first half, hitting nine of 10 shots from the field. Bryson added 10.

“He scored early inside, sank a three in transition and you could just see his confidence building,’’ Coach Pat Miller said.

Miller said Bryson had a good game on both ends of the floor.

“Bryson moves well without the ball and does a lot of nice things,” Miller said. “He hit a couple of open threes and kept (Northwestern’s) best scorer (Wade Chitwood) to 6 for 16.’’

While the Warhawks played a smooth game to gain the victory, St. Thomas had to fight into overtime for a victory, but Miller does not believe that will have a bearing on tonight’s game.

“I’ve been around this game too long to think that will be a factor,” Miller said. “It can be dramatically different for one night to the next. St. Thomas is the defending national champs and they will play well.’’

Whitewater made 20 of 27 (74 percent) field goal attempts in the first half, including six of 10 three-point attempts en route to a 46-33 lead.

Tom Gisler scored 22 points for Northwestern, including five three-point baskets. Northwestern made 13 of 25 three-point basket attempts overall.
