Whitewater, East Troy tie in North; Brodhead wraps up South title

Whitewater High completed its run to the Rock Valley Conference North girls basketball championship Thursday night.


The Whippets defeated host Evansville, 69-45, to earn a share of the North title with East Troy. Each team finished 15-1 in the conference.


Sophomore guard Brooke Trewyn again led the Whippets’ scoring attack with 19 points, including seven in the third quarter when Whitewater expanded a 35-24 halftime advantage to 49-34 going into the fourth quarter.


Nicole Masterson added 13 points, and nine Whippets scored in the win.


Senior Leeanna Kinney led the Blue Devils with 14 points, including four three-pointers.


Evansville finished 5-11 in the Rock Valley and is 6-16 overall.

-- East Troy 64, Edgerton 38—East Troy outscored visiting Edgerton, 25-5, in the first quarter and breezed to its share of the Rock Valley Conference North title.


Rachel Atchison scored 22 points and Breanna Gaspervich added 21 as the Trojans finished in a first-place tie with Whitewater at 15-1. The Trojans are 20-2 overall.


Brooke Ferrell led Edgerton (11-5, 15-7) with eight points.

-- McFarland 57, Jefferson 51—McFarland made 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter when the Spartans rallied past visiting Jefferson.


The teams were tied at 35-all going into the final quarter.


Maddie Hettinger and Brooke Doll each had 12 points to lead McFarland, which finished 6-10 in the Rock Valley North. The Spartans are 7-15 going into tournament play.


Vivianne Gilbertson added 10 points in the win.


Senior Torri Gnabasik led the Eagles (8-8, 9-13) with 14.

-- Brodhead 73, Parkview 43—Brodhead closed the book on its Rock Valley Conference South championship with an easy win over visiting Parkview.


The Cardinals finished 14-2 in conference play. Brodhead is 19-3 overall.


Junior Mariah Ahrens led the Cardinal charge with 19 points. Sophomore Rachel Heller and junior Taylor Douglas each added 14.


Brodhead pulled away from a 21-16 first-quarter lead to take a 58-29 lead into the final quarter.


Molly Wellnitz led Park-view (4-12, 4-17) with 10 points.

-- Clinton 58, Turner 50—Megan Lantz scored 33 points, including a 12-of-16 performance from the line, to clinch the Rock Valley Conference scoring title with 284 points.


Lantz came close to the school single-game scoring record of 38 points by Vicki Voss.


Mallory Niemann added 13 points and 14 rebounds. Niemann finished second behind Lantz in conference scoring with 234 points, and she led the league with 134 rebounds.


Kayla Washburn led the Trojans with 12 points.
