— A Janesville man accused of beating his girlfriend to death and hiding her body pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Rock County Court.

Michael R. Paul, 36, of 326 S. Parker Drive, Janesville, is charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of hiding a corpse. Janesville police Jan. 10 found the body of Lisa M. Schaefer, 49, in the basement of the home she shared with Paul, according to police. The two had been having relationship problems, Paul told police during the investigation.

Police think Paul killed Schaefer on Jan. 7. He is in custody at the Rock County Jail on a $200,000 cash bond.

Dane County Medical Examiner Vincent Tranchida previously said in court that Schaefer's eyes and face were badly bruised, some teeth were knocked out of her mouth and she had fractured rib, jaw and neck bones. Schaefer died from a hemorrhage at the base of her skull, he said.
