— The cost of a youth hiking club has been cut in an attempt to attract more participants.

The fee for Summer Saunters, a youth hiking club for students in third through 12th grades, has been reduced from $25 to $10, said Shelley Slapak, acting recreation director at the Janesville Leisure Services Department.

As of Thursday, no children had signed up for the program scheduled July 16-20. A minimum of 20 kids is needed to run the program, she said.

Participants will meet at 8 a.m. at Palmer Park, 2501 Palmer Drive, where they will load a bus and be taken to segments of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. During the hikes, participants will learn about Wisconsin flora, fauna and geological history.

Each child will receive a T-shirt, an Ice Age Trail atlas and assistance from an Ice Age Trail companion guide.

To sign up, call (608) 755-3030.
