Janesville Legion gains split, wins tournament

JANESVILLE — The Janesville American Legion settled for a split, but still won the Father’s Day tournament Sunday at Riverside Park.

Janesville (7-3) defeated Beloit, 7-5, in the morning opener to clinch the tournament title. Janesville fell, 3-0, to Oconomowoc in the afternoon game.

Janesville scored six runs on five hits in the first inning to take command of Beloit. Jake Welch and Adam Greene singled to knock in two runs apiece to highlight the inning.

Andrew Iverson allowed four runs on eight hits through five innings for the victory.

Oconomowoc’s Tyler Christensen blanked Janesville on six hits. Christensen had three hits and knocked in two runs to support his cause.

“I was happy with the way we swung the bats,” Janesville coach Bob Schenck said. “We only had two strikeouts and we hit the ball hard.’’

Janesville starter Andrew Kersten allowed five Oconomowoc hits, but just one earned run, to take the loss.

Janesville hosts Hononegah and the Madison Impact in a Tuesday doubleheader. Janesville plays Hononegah at 5 p.m.
