— The season came to an end Wednesday afternoon for Janesville Craig’s girls soccer team.

Despite an advantage in a couple of categories, the Cougars couldn’t find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to Racine Horlick in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal game.

Horlick plays the winner of tonight’s game between Burlington and Kenosha Tremper for a berth in next week’s state tournament.

Craig (10-10-5) outshot Horlick and dominated play the last 15 minutes of the game but could not get a shot past goalkeeper Abby Lyon, who finished with 10 saves.

“We just couldn’t finish when we had the opportunity to,” Craig coach Bill McCabe said. “And that is something that hurt us at times this season.

“But I give our girls a lot of credit. They pressured Horlick until the very end.

Horlick got the only goal it needed at 36:50 of the first half on Aly Anderson’s unassisted goal. Kaci Schonert made it

2-0 at 47:09 off a corner kick from Anderson.

With many of the players taking final exams Wednesday, McCabe said his team was rushed from the time it got on the bus until taking the field for a 3:45 p.m. start.

“I don’t want to use it as an excuse because we just didn’t finish our shots, but our girls never could get off the mark,” McCabe said. “The game started even earlier than it was supposed to, and I’m not sure we were really ready to go once it did.

“But I’ve got 11 juniors on this team that learned a lot from this game. They’re eager to get back to work and get ready for what should be a good season next year.”

Maddie Schroeder made eight saves for Craig.
