— Orfordville Parkview High relied on clutch pitching and hitting Tuesday to earn a berth in the WIAA Division 3 state baseball tournament next week.

The Vikings defeated Fennimore, 4-3, in the sectional semifinal and Arcadia, 4-1, for the sectional title and the trip to state.

Parkview (18-7) plays Menasha St. Mary’s Central (19-4) in a 1 p.m. semifinal next Wednesday at Fox Cities Stadium in Little Chute.

The Parkview baseball team is the school’s first to earn a state team berth. The boys track and field team did win state titles in 1979 and 1980.

“Our goal this season was to win conference and the regional championship,” Parkview coach Troy Aasen said. “I have no seniors on the team, everybody will be back next year.’’

The Vikings took their goals a step farther thanks to strong pitching performances from Jamison Lavery and Trevor Aasen.

Lavery tossed a complete-game three-hitter to stop Fennimore and Aasen held Arcadia to four hits to boost the Vikings to state. Lavery no-hit Cambridge for a 1-0 victory in a regional opener and Aasen followed with a three-hit shutout, 3-0, victory over Wisconsin Heights for the sectional berth.

“They are our two big horses,” Aasen said. “We tried to keep them fresh through the season for the end of the year.’’

Parkview rallied for three runs in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie with Arcadia. Riley Pearson, Elliott Olson, Lavery and Charlie Thole each singled to highlight the Vikings’ rally.

Aasen allowed just two hits the rest of the way, and wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Aasen issued a walk and a single and a two-out walk to load the bases, but got a pop out to end the game and send Parkview to state.

In posting the victory, Aasen threw 96 pitches and 65 were strikes. He notched three strikeouts and walked one.

In the opener, Fennimore scored three runs, on walk and a pair of hits, including a two-run double in the third inning, to erase Parkview’s 2-0 lead.

The Vikings’ Lavery, Jarrett Warden, Olsen and Thole each singled to drive in two runs in the bottom of the third inning to give Parkview the lead for good, 4-3.

Lavery faced the minimum number of batters from the fourth through the seventh to hold Parkview’s one-run lead. Lavery allowed three hits, notched 11 strikeouts and walked a pair.
