Craig girls advance to soccer sectional
Speth now leads in goals with 16 and Crandall in assists with 10, and the Cougars are headed to sectional play.
Speth scored three goals, all off assists from Crandall, and the Cougars defeated Racine Case, 3-2, in overtime in the regional championship game at Racine Horlick on Saturday.
“The girls are really excited,” Craig coach Bill McCabe said from the raucous bus on the trip home.
Speth and Crandall teamed up twice in the first 20 minutes of the first half to give Craig the 2-0 advantage.
“This was by far the most physical game we’ve ever played in,” McCabe said. “We were just getting beaten up in the first 10 minutes.
“The girls got together and said, ‘We know we can play like this.’ The girls turned it on and wouldn’t take a backseat to anybody.”
Samantha Yasatas finally got Case on the board with a goal with just four minutes left in the first half.
The Cougar defense held the lead for most of the second half.
“Our defense worked really well together,” McCabe said.
Yasatas tied the game in the final minutes, which came off a questionable offside no-call, McCabe said.
Speth and Crandall saw to it that that goal would not end the Cougars’ season.
Just after the first overtime began, Crandall fed Speth, who did the rest of the work.
“Monica had three players around her,” McCabe said. “The ball kept bouncing around. All four players were clumped together.
“Monica kept fighting, and finally, the ball bounced out of the clump, and Monica got it and was one-on-one with the goalie.”
Speth buried the ball into the net just 27 seconds into the overtime.
The Cougars play Racine Horlick at Horlick on Wednesday. The sectional semifinal originally was set for Thursday, but was moved due to Craig’s graduation ceremony that night.
