J.D. Byrider office opening in Janesville
JANESVILLE One of the nation’s top used car and finance company franchises will open later this year in Janesville.
Construction started for a 5,500-square-foot J.D. Byrider office at 3316 Pontiac Drive last week. The store, which sits on a one-acre lot, is expected to open in December.
J.D. Byrider opened in 1989 and is based in Carmel, Ind. It has 135 dealerships across the nation, owned by either franchisees or the company.
The Janesville store will be owned by the Francois family, which owns and operates a variety of businesses.
Sara Investment Real Estate owns the land and will own the building, which was designed by the Janesville-based Angus Young Associates and will be built by Harmony Construction of Madison. The Bank of Milton is financing the project.
Sara Investment has several developments in the Janesville area.
Vic Grassman, Janesville’s economic development director, said the business would open with 10 employees.

This is a plague on our Community yet again! Why is it that these bottom feeding vultures are allowed to keep stealing from our Community? Oh wait we don't have LEADERSHIP IN OUR CITY COUNCIL!! They will pass anything that "certain specific" people want here. This is ridiculous, that we will see people leaving the check to cash facilities so that they can go and pay for their rip off low end terrible maintained vehicles while the rip off our communities and families that can't afford anything else. These places are doing nothing but keeping HONEST, GOOD WORKING PEOPLE, DOWN so that we our Community Can't Bounce Back!

Why are they building in an empty lot instead of buying an old dealer lot? Maybe the franchise owner likes to eat at Hooters and he doesn't like to drive. Perhaps he thinks that all those Harley riders might come over and kick a few tires when it gets too cold to ride. Could be he thinks all those Van Galder riders might want to look at some alternatives. Or most likely he thinks folks on the freeway will see his sign.

A GMD store. Unfortunatly this is the only was to get a loan. TO bad some of these people pay this hue rates but this is what happens when bills don't get paid. You must make your payment or they repo the car and resell it to somebody else. At least in WI the cars will have a safety done on them VS IL and you don't know what is wrong with the car. Hopefully they wont just check off the boxes and not really check the car.

The problem is that here, and in most of the midwest. it is difficult to get around without a vehicle, unless you live in a town with decent public transportation, and that isn't Janesville. Winter is the big problem. So, most folks "need" a car of some kind. Paying cash? Sounds great, who here can save up at least 10k for a decent used vehicle? Not many, which is why places like JB Byrider get business. These are people that have ruined their credit already, most through their own fault, but there are many folks who get stuck in a bind.
The best thing you can do is save as much money as possible and work on repairing your credit, then head to a credit union or local bank. IF you get approved for a $25k car loan, chop about 10k off of that and buy the the cheapest car that suits your needs. Never get a loan longer than 5 years, ever. 3-4 should really be the max. If the only way you can afford the car you want is with a 5-7 year loan, then you're looking at the wrong car.
Used cars can have nearly the same payment as a new car, depending on the year/mileage. The older the car, the shorter the loan period and the higher the payments, but you will own the car quicker, and hopefully have it last longer than the payments.
Really, cars are never an "investment". They are a loss the moment you buy them, and some makes worse than others. However, people get caught up in the marketing and want the shiny fancy car instead of the cheaper people mover, but then it's a free country, you can blow your money how ever you choose.

So when does this place open? I just want to know so I know when to start up my repo business. And as for nicksmom....are you really serious? If you can't buy it with cash then you can't afford it? So is that also true with buying a house? I'm sorry but judging by some of your other posts I hope Nick has his fathers brains.

I doubt the city could ever argue that it has the legal authority to allow or disallow any law-abiding business to operate. But if it were to try, how could it justify rejecting J.D. Byrider's presence in our fair city while allowing all those payday loan outfits to stay. Equal protection under the law isn't something the City can just ignore whenever it wants to. After all, they couldn't even get rid of Screamin' Meemee's until they could prove it really was a house of prostitution. And then only as the result of a plea bargain.

Bucky, the caliber of people who will use this place are the ones who either don't, won't, or can't actually research and make informed decisions with their money, which is how they got there in the first place. You can have limited income and still make good choices and therefore have options other than going to a bottom-feeder business like this.

There is a huge difference between reputable car dealers and these loan sharks. Unfortunately the City of Janesville seems to have no problem letting these predatory businesses open up here!! Look at how many payday loan shops there are here, now these slime balls!!!!!!!

Here's a little more fun facts I just found on J.D.Byrider;
*
In 2005 the Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro settled a lawsuit against J.D. Byrider stemming from customer complaints. As part of this settlement, JD Byrider agreed to make more than 20 remedial changes to its business practices in order to operate within compliance of Ohio laws.
*
In 2006 the Kentucky Attorney General settled a lawsuit against J.D. Byrider stemming from customer complaints. Customers who purchased vehicles from J.D. Byrider of Louisville between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2004 may be entitled to either a cash refund or a credit of $500 on their loans. On Feb. 1, 2006 the Louisville location ended its association with J.D. Byrider.
****************************************
Yup, sure sounds like the kind of folks Janesville needs at a time like this.

After doing a little bit of online research I found some facts about this new business coming to our city, and it's not all good....
*
First it's worth noting that they are in fact NOT one of the nation’s top used car and finance company franchises, they are one of the biggest, but not tops in this category by any stretch of ones imagination. They have a long list of complaints, and court cases in the states they operate in,(as some of you already know), here is a link to 524 current complaints and or law suits against them, 21 pages of them total on just this one site;
http://www.ripoffreport.com/directory/jd...
To call them tops, well that just sounds like they may have signed on for some big dollar advertising with The Gazette, so they are being creatively imaginative in the description of the business here.
*
This will actually be number 139 in their chain of buy here pay here dealerships that specialize in five to ten year old vehicles.
They operate in 31 states, mainly East of the Mississippi River, although J.D. Byrider is the car lot normally advertised in the media, the company's sister organization—CNAC, which stands for Car Now Acceptance Company—deals with the actual financing and loan collection process. CNAC normally buys 100 percent of the loans that J.D. Byrider originates! That should tell you something in itself right there, 100 percent acceptance when we all know of someone who couldn't get a loan on a postage stamp even with .35 cents down and a co-signer, but not here, THEY TAKE EVERYBODY, the key word there is TAKE, so ask yourself, how do they do it??
Some states do NOT allow these types of predatory dealerships to do business in their states. They are planing on opening more dealerships in states that they already operate in during the upcoming months and in 2013 and run in primarily down economic cities where they know they will have a sizable number of potential customers to make a larger haul of money off of.
*
It's a shame that the city is allowing them in, when they sure don't seem concerned about the businesses they already have here in town. Empty buildings left and right, vacant homes, and now the buzzards appear to be ready to come and swoop in and clean the carcasses of the weak credited people that just don't know any better and are ripe for the picking.
*
This is not the type of business Janesville needs coming in at this time. I've heard some of you compare it to title loan places, well these guys make them look like borrowing money from a friend!!
*
I'm sure this won't be the last time we read about them......

k_ati_e - I understand that, however, many people unaware of the flexibility of financing at reputable dealerships assume they won't be able to get financed and head straight for a dump like JD. No one should assume their credit is so bad that they can't get financed through a reputable dealership.

As long as they stay within the law, they have every right to open their business here. I support that right and I hope they will employ some folks who need jobs. However, they will not get my business (baring unforeseen circumstances) and I would advise anyone who will listen not to do business there who can find a more reasonable alternative. That said, they do serve a customer base that has difficulty getting car loans, and for good reason. It's their customers that have a reputation for not paying their bills. All businesses have a reputation for insisting on payment. You can't really hold that against J.D. Byrider.

I would always choose to celebrate the opening of a new business in Janesville, but this is a buy-here-pay-here bottom-feeder and as noted there are many horror stories about this type of operation and this retailer in particular. They have their own in-house lender, CNAC, and use them for all their car loans. This type of company is extremely aggressive about loan cancellation and repossession. The industry is attracting regulatory scrutiny and California is considering clamping down on such dealers. The company has already run afoul of attorneys general in other states; I hope J.B. Van Hollen is keeping a close watch on them.

JD Byrider is the equivalent to a Check N To Cash store for buying cars. They are rated poorly and many claim they use predatory lending tactics attached to used cars normal dealers can't make profits on.
I'm as proud of this store being built as another Car Title Loan or Short Term Loan store going in.
