What to know if you plan to attend Rock County 4-H Fair

JANESVILLE — If you’re planning to visit the Rock County 4-H Fair, which begins Tuesday at the Rock County Fairgrounds in Janesville, here are eight things you’ll want to know, said Mary Check, office manager:

1. First Aid and cooling areas. An air-conditioned first aid tent offers a place for people to go if they’re not feeling well or need to cool off. Extra water tanks also are being made available for people and the animals. And a new cool-water misting area with picnic tables can be found in the Blue Ribbon pavilion.

2. Parking and shuttle. Free shuttle service will run every half hour from the west-end parking lot of Creston Park (by Office Max) to Gate 3 on East Memorial Drive of the fairgrounds between 5 and 11 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. In addition to off-street parking, vehicles have the options of paying to park at First Lutheran Church, 612 N. Randall Ave., or at Adams Elementary School, 1138 E. Memorial Drive.

3. Tickets and admission: A season pass for adults is $22 and for youth (7 to 12) is $10. Daily admission is $4 for youth and adults Tuesday, $5 for youth and $8 for adults Wednesday through Sunday, and $4 for senior citizens 62 and older Thursday. Children younger than 7 will be admitted for free.

4. Carnival. Kids days are scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 24 and Friday, July 27, when one less coupon is needed per ride. Wristband days are from noon to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and cost $25, and from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, for $22. North American Midway Entertainment changes up the rides every year and will bring a couple new rides this year.

5. Food. Among new food vendors are Texas Roadhouse that is bringing some favorite items off its regular menu and Lakebrada Restaurant of Beloit that will serve Mexican food. Other food favorites will be back, including cheese curds, pork sandwiches and dairy offerings from the farm bureau trailer.

6. Exhibits. The Block Building that houses field crops, garden and fruit plus nature space exhibits has been revamped with some cosmetic changes that include curtains and benches. Take note of the veggie cutouts in front of this building where you can have your picture taken. And to promote fruits and vegetables, veggie races will happen at various times during the day. Times will be posted in front of the building.

7. Entertainment. The fair is selling a separate ticket for the 8 p.m. Saturday Josh Turner concert. To get tickets—$20 for reserved seating and $15 for general admission—visit rockcounty4hfair.com or stop in at the 4-H fair office. Buying tickets on line requires a credit or debit card.

8. New daytime entertainment. Team Rock, an extreme martial arts demonstration, can be seen at 2 and 6 p.m. Tuesday and Friday behind the main entertainment stage.
